This exceedingly pleasing Bidjar runner approaches the long and narrow format in a playful and novel manner. During the late 19th century the Kurdish town of Bijar and its surrounding area became a major Persian carpet producing center, weaving a variety of rugs and carpets both small and large. Central medallions were a popular design format used in these carpets. While a variety of all-over designs appear in Bidjar pieces, here a design based on a repeating prominent central medallion is skillfully improvised. Runners were traditionally paired with large carpets so it is likely that this piece was woven as part of a set, of which the central piece was a large medallion carpet. A fine gilt bronze and Champlevé Enamel Garniture Set comprising a pair of candelabra and a brûle-parfum and cover.
French, circa 1890.
The brûle -parfum or censor with a domed champlevé enamel lid above a gilt bronze pierced guilloche border with ram's head mounts supported by a baluster column flanked by seated putti finely cast with musical instruments on a circular base. The candelabra en suite having a pair of of putti figures supporting candlearms with circular champlevé enamel drip trays and sconces.
Champlevé enamelling, is similar to cloisonné in that the enamel is applied to discrete cells separated by metal. However, in champlevé, cells or troughs are cast into or cut away from the metal base, leaving a raised metal line between the cells which forms the outline of a design. The cells are then filled with molten or powdered glass and fired.

An exceptional pair of 18th century English Rococo gilt bronze andirons or fire dogs.
The bold shape of these andirons relate to designs of Thomas Johnson (1714–1778), one of London's pioneers of the 'Modern' or French style, later known as Rococo. In the 1750s he published several books of designs which were widely used for things like ceiling moulding. Situated along the ancient Silk Roads running between China and Central Asia, Khotan is an oasis city in the region of East Turkestan in what is now Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous region in northwest China. Reflecting the geography in which it was woven, this piece blends elements of Central Asian and Chinese design. A central medallion is drawn in the center of an abstract field which actively combines a host of well-spaced floating motifs.
