Elizabeth Gourlay Art

American

Elizabeth Gourlay is an American abstract artist, whose work emerges from a progressive process of layering color, lines and forms, informed both by inner emotional states, and her observation of nature and architecture. She lives and works in Chester, Connecticut. She was invited to work with Master Printer Anthony Kirk. Gourlay finds the immediacy and experimental quality of monotypes valuable to her practice as an artist. Her work is featured in various private and corporate collections, including The Lewitt Collection, The Marriott Family and Yale University. She is the recipient of several grants and fellowships, including two Individual Artist State Grants from the DECD/Connecticut Office of the Arts. In 2011, she was an invited artist in residence at the studio of Sol LeWitt, Spoleto, Italy. Gourlay uses a wide range of media such as oil, flashe, acrylic, ink and graphite to create artfully simple and strong compositions. Gourlay thinks of her work as a meditation on colors, lines and forms, leading to a complex network of shifting shapes and colors. She has an interest in elements found in nature, architecture and music, drawing lines, grids and geometric shapes to demonstrate it. Indeed, her work is often described by its musicality and architectural connotations. The use of line suggests influences from Agnes Martin, while her play of color reminds Paul Klee’s work. Her compositions deal with order and chaos using a line, color and shape.

Chestnut, Mint Green, Brown, Orange, Beige Square Abstract Geometric Painting
By Elizabeth Gourlay
Located in Kent, CT
Clean and precise, carefully ordered stripes and blocks of color in pale mint green, light blue, brown, beige and burnt orange complement the soft gray and beige background. Signed, dated and titled on verso. Elizabeth Gourlay’s work is a meditation on color and form, a gradual yet progressive analysis leading to a complex vocabulary of shapes, color and line. Musical composition, emotional states and our collective subconscious resonate within bars, lines and blocks of color. The abstract forms emerge, layer and shift in precisely ordered, carefully composed rhythms. The artist contemplates the elements that make color in reduced forms come to life: size, flatness, relation to its edges, and how the presence of other colors affect how it is perceived. Gourlay draws inspiration from shapes found in everyday life and in her studio. The observed shapes either remain as they are or become simplified to their essential geometric elements. Subtleties in color, area, edge or orientation are the catalyst for emotive responses. Palette is minimized; the artist rarely uses a wide palette within one work. Rather, a broad range of colors are explored and then reduced. Gourlay investigates color properties: complementary or analogous color, value, saturation and color harmony vs. color anomaly. Elizabeth’s Gourlay’s work has been shown extensively throughout the United States. The artist is the recipient of numerous residencies, fellowships and awards including Artist in Residence at the studio of Sol LeWitt in Spoleto, Italy. Gourlay’s work has been written about in The New Criterion, Painters’ Table and Gorky’s Granddaughter, to name a few. Gourlay earned her MFA at Yale University School of Art, New Haven, CT, and her BA from Edinburgh...

Moon (Graphic Abstract Painting in Red, Dark Teal & Yellow)
By Jenny Kemp
Located in Hudson, NY
Graphic abstract painting on paper in in complementary hues of red-orange, dark teal and yellow "Duo" by Jenny Kemp, painted in 2020 acrylic on linen over panel 14 x 11 inches Signed, verso Jenny Kemp’s abstract paintings are inspired by the artist’s desire to represent unseen phenomenon. With intricate and calculated line-work, the artist builds parallel layers against opaque backgrounds, while shifts in color and shape call attention to organic forms that give reference to the human body or atomic structures. Precise lines in light green arc over a layer of opaque moss green before colliding with forms of bright red-orange. A serene layer of dark teal complements these contrasting colliding forms, allowing a visual reprieve. The gouache painting on paper is complimented with a light wood frame, protected by non-glare glass. Wire is installed on the back for seamless hanging. About the artist: Jenny Kemp received a BS in Art from the University of Wisconsin - Madison and an MFA in Painting from the University at Albany. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums across the country, most recently at Gold/Scopophilia* in Montclair, NJ and the Mandeville Gallery at Union College in Schenectady, NY. She has been featured in publications such as 100 Painters of Tomorrow published by Thames & Hudson, New American Paintings, The Huffington Post, Seattle’s City Arts, New York Times, and The New England Review. Kemp is also a recipient of the 2015 NYFA fellowship in painting and the 2015 Emerging Artist Award recipient from the Art Center of the Capital Region in Troy, NY. She sits on the board of Collar Works, an art space dedicated to the support of emerging and under-represented artists exhibiting challenging and culturally relevant contemporary artworks in Troy, NY where she lives and works. The Quiet Breath
By Louise Blyton
Located in Phoenix, AZ
b. Melbourne, Australia Louise Blyton is a reductive artist exploring the romance of raw linen and dry pigment. The artist’s geometrically shaped canvases explore color, light, and form through the visual language of Reductivism, an aesthetic style characterized by streamlined compositions, restricted color, and a reduction of form and means. Identifying with Reductivism’s simplicity, Blyton’s shaped canvases and three-dimensional wall sculptures elevate craftsmanship and process, achieving a compositional clarity that unifies color and form. To construct her works, Blyton covers custom built balsa wood stretchers with raw linen, adorning them with layers of pure pigment or acrylic paint. Each pigment reacts differently to raw linen and requires a specific number of coats to reach the artist’s desired level of saturation. As the artist explains, “I’m always looking for a kind of quietness and harmony when making my works even if the color being used is loud.” The artist creates her own spatial dimension by manipulating the shape of the canvas, which escapes from the flat surface of the wall, confusing its role as a painting. “Rather than responding to the architecture they ask particular attributes of the building to act as support,” as some works appear to climb the surface of the walls, while others straddle columns and corners. Louise Blyton lives and works in Melbourne, Australia. She graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Art at RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia in 1988. Her works are held in significant corporate and private collections in Australia, China, France, United Kingdom, Portugal, and the United States. Since 2000, Blyton has run an artist supply store called, St. Luke Artist Colourman, which specializes in professional paint and raw materials, with her husband David Coles.
