Lawrence Schiller Portrait Photography

American, b. 1936
The themes of celebrity and scandal anchor much of Lawrence Schiller’s diverse body of work, which spans from photography and nonfiction writing to directing Oscar-winning films including Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) and The Man Who Skied Down Everest (1972). Schiller achieved early success as a photojournalist, publishing photographs of movie stars, athletes, and politicians in magazines and newspapers worldwide. Schiller’s most iconic images capture a nude Marilyn Monroe filming a pool scene for the motion picture Something’s Got to Give, just a few months before her death in 1962. In addition to his memoir Marilyn & Me (2012), Schiller has published eleven books over the course of his career, many with his lifelong collaborator Norman Mailer.

Discover the epitome of leisurely sophistication with Slim Aarons' stunning photograph from 1980, showcasing the quintessence of laid-back luxury at the illustrious Hotel Punta Tragara in Capri. In this masterful composition, Catherine Wilke epitomizes the serene joy of sunny European leisure, gracefully strolling with a fresh coconut beverage amidst an array of topless sun worshippers basking under the Mediterranean sun. This evocative scene is a harmonious blend of natural beauty and human allure, with the glittering turquoise sea forming the perfect backdrop to a tableau of relaxation and style. In addition to Catherine, this scene captures Elisabetta Catalano, Charlotte Ticken, and Pamela Grupas, each contributing to the canvas of vintage elegance in their vibrant red and blue swimsuits paired with timeless straw sunhats. Their repose on the crisp white linens laid upon the geometrically arranged sunbathing beds underlines the meticulous composition that Aarons was renowned for. This image is a visual symphony, where the architectural lines of the sunbathing terrace intersect with the soft curves of the relaxed figures, crafting a scene that captures the essence of the high life without pretense. He was born and raised in New York City and New Jersey and later New Hampshire. He took up photography as a teenager. At the age of eighteen, he enlisted in the U. S. Army and was later appointed official photographer at the United States Military Academy at West Point. During World War II he served as an army combat photographer for Yank magazine in Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. After the war he became a freelance photojournalist, first based in Hollywood, then Rome, then New York. His photographs appeared in many magazines, including Life, Holiday, Town & Country, Look, Venture, and Travel & Leisure. His first book A Wonderful Time (1974) is considered a classic.
