Paul Delvaux Figurative Prints

Belgian, 1897-1994

Paul Delvaux was born in 1897 in Belgium. He was one of the leading exponents of Surrealism, as well as one of the most popular painters of all time. He is famous for his female portraits located into mysterious surreal interiors and landscapes. In 1965, Delvaux was encouraged by Mira Jacob, a private collector of Symbolist and Surrealist paintings, to begin making lithographs. Later in 1976, Jacob published her book Paul Delvaux: Graphic Work, for which the Belgian artist produced many engravings, some of which are dry-points. Delvaux died in 1994.

The Dance. A Lithograph by Paul Delvaux. 1969
By Paul Delvaux

’The Dance’ By Paul Delvaux Medium - Lithograph Edition - 8/75 Signed - Yes Size - 360mm x 460mm Date - 1969 Condition - Excellent. 10 out of 10. Colour of print may not be accurate when viewed on a monitor. Paul Delvaux was a Belgian painter noted for his dream-like scenes of women, classical architecture, trains and train stations, and skeletons, often in combination. He is often considered a surrealist, although he only briefly identified with the Surrealist movement. He was influenced by the works of Giorgio de Chirico and René Magritte, but developed his own fantastical subjects and hyper-realistic styling, combining the detailed classical beauty of academic painting with the bizarre juxtapositions of surrealism. Throughout his long career, Delvaux explored "Nude and skeleton, the clothed and the unclothed, male and female, desire and horror, eroticism and death – Delvaux's major anxieties in fact, and the greater themes of his later work. Delvaux was born on 23 September 1897 in Antheit (now part of Wanze) in the Belgian province of Liège. His parents lived in Brussels, but his mother went to her own mother's home to have her first child. The birthplace house would later be destroyed by fire, in 1940. The father was Jean Delvaux, a prosperous barrister at the Court of Appeal Brussels. The mother was the musician Laure Jamotte, who became a strong, dominant presence in his life, directing, controlling, and repressing his childhood and adolescent desires. The young Delvaux studied Greek and Latin, and absorbed the fiction of Jules Verne and the poetry of Homer's Odyssey. His artwork was to be greatly influenced by these readings, starting with his earliest drawings showing mythological scenes. His music lessons were conducted in the school's museum room, where a human skeleton in a glass cabinet was always present. From 1910 to 1916, he studied Classics at the Atheneum of Saint-Gilles, where he was a middling or average student. Upon his graduation, his parents got him an office job with a shipping company in Brussels. It was soon evident that he had no skills or interests in business or law, and he was grudgingly allowed to study architecture at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts despite his ambition to become a painter. In 1916, he started at the Académie, initially learning the basics of architecture and perspective drawing. He was then disqualified due to his weakness in mathematics, and dropped out after his first year Delvaux was worried about his future career, and passed the time by copying postcards. His mother advised him to paint from nature, and in 1919 he produced his first watercolors, some scenic vistas. On a family vacation in Zeebrugge in 1919, he met by chance the painter Franz Courtens...

Paul Delvaux, (born September 23, 1897, Antheit, Liège, Belgium—died July 20, 1994, Veurne), Belgian Surrealist painter and printmaker whose canvases typically portray transfixed nudes and skeletons in mysterious settings. From 1920 to 1924 Delvaux studied architecture and painting at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. His early work was influenced by Post-Impressionism and Expressionism, but after discovering the work of Salvador Dalí, Giorgio de Chirico, and his fellow Belgian René Magritte, Delvaux converted to a Surrealist style in the mid-1930s. He traveled through Italy before World War II, and the Classical architecture he encountered there developed into recurring motifs in his work. During that trip he was also greatly influenced by early 16th-century Italian Mannerist...

Construction d'un Temple en Ruine - Plate n. 5
By Paul Delvaux
Located in Roma, IT
Construction d’un temple – Plate n.5 is a b/w original etching and dypoint realized in 1972 (as reported on plate on the lower right margin) by Paul Delvaux. From the collection “Construction d’un temple en ruine à la déesse Vanadé”, this original print came into being from the collaboration of four years among the French author and a member of the Nouveau-Roman group Alain Robbe-Grillet (1922-2008), and the Belgian artist Paul Delvaux (1897-1994). At first, Robbe-Grillet wrote a text, to which Delvaux then replied with a wonderful engraving, Robbe-Grillet then responded with a second text. This is how the building blocks of this beautiful book came together: it was constructed like a temple. The book was printed in an edition of 187 copies, of which only 40 contain the illustrations by Paul Delvaux. Our copy is unnumbered and printed on “Arches” ivory colored paper with the Bateau Lavoir watermark (on the lower right corner), and “Richard Bas” watermark (on the lower left margin). Image dimensions: 31.3 x 44.3 cm This exceptional artwork, representing an interesting composition with a woman depicted like an ancient Greek marble statue...

His talent as an artist showed at an early age and Salvador Felipe Jacinto Dali received his first drawing lessons when he was ten years old. His art teachers were a then well known Spanish impressionist painter, Ramon Pichot and later an art professor at the Municipal Drawing School. In 1923 his father bought his son his first printing press. Dali began to study art at the Royal Academy of Art in Madrid. He was expelled twice and never took the final examinations. His opinion was that he was more qualified than those who should have examined him. In 1928 Dali went to Paris where he met the Spanish painters Pablo Picasso and Joan Miro. He established himself as the principal figure of a group of surrealist artists grouped around Andre Breton, who was something like the theoretical "schoolmaster" of surrealism. Years later Breton turned away from Dali accusing him of support of fascism, excessive self-presentation and financial greediness. By 1929 Dali had found his personal style that should make him famous the world of the unconscious that is recalled during our dreams. The surrealist theory is based on the theories of the psychologist Dr. Sigmund Freud. Recurring images of burning giraffes and melting watches...

The Secret
By Paul Delvaux
Located in Petworth, West Sussex
Paul Delvaux (Belgian, 1897 – 1994) ‘The Secret’, 1966 Signed and numbered P. Delvaux 35/75 (lower right and left respectively) Lithograph 28.1/4 x 21in. (71.7 x 53cm.) (to mount edge) Paul Delvaux’s career developed in the shadow of Nazi Germany. It should not come as a surprise then that his work is known for a distinct sense of anxiety and unease. Surprisingly, that anxiety is not expressed in overtly political subjects. Delvaux was instead interested in exploring humanity and the hidden recesses of the subconscious. He began his artistic training studying architecture in 1916. But soon shifted his focus to painting. While he initially found inspiration in European Expressionism, his mature style was inspired by an altogether different source, the Surrealists. Although he was not an official member of the Surrealists, he shared the group’s interest in plumbing the depths of the mind. Like his contemporaries Giorgio de Chirico and Rene Magritte, Delvaux used...
