19th Century Japanese Meiji Era Patinated Bronze Foo Dog Lion Group Censer

About the Item

A large and impressive Japanese Meiji period (1852-1912) patinated bronze guardian lion censer. Late 19th century, Japan, exceptionally executed, the group consisting of four shishi foo dogs, depicting two large foos at play frolicking and mock fighting, teaching a pair of small foo pups to its flanks. The sculpture is highly animated and showcases dramatic movement with tumbling interwound bodies, flying fur and resplendent shishi tails waving. The sculptural tail features an open cavity for use as an incense burner. True to Japanese esthetic, the work is subtly sculpted and expressively powerful. An exceptional work of art Dimensions: (approx) 15.5" Wide, 10" High, 9" Deep Overall great shape, especially considering its age. Nicely aged patina over the whole. Wear consistent with age, including evidence of old epoxy reattaching the small foo to the right, typical surface wear throughout, remnants of original gilt accents, remaining incense ashes. Overall a superb museum quality example that presents splendidly
