"Grape Carriers, " Striking and Unique Art Deco Bowl w/ Wine Motif by Nylund

About the Item

Depicting a Black male figure paired with a white female figure carrying clusters of grapes and ancient wine jars, this unique and striking Art Deco bowl was designed by Gunnar Nylund in the "Flambe" style for the famed Rorstrand porcelain works in Sweden. It is glazed in rich, gorgeous greenish gray and ivory glazes, and is well marked on the reverse. Before he became known for his organic forms and mottled glazes in the post-World War II period, Nylund designed a line of very fine Art Deco pieces in what he called a "flambe" glaze: rich browns or blue-gray in color, often highlighted with gold. Nylund worked for Rorstrand from 1931 to 1958.
