Pierre Jeanneret PJ-SI-68-A Low Sewing Stool / Authentic Mid-Century Modern

About the Item

Here we see a decision to project the universal ideals of modernity onto Indian reality. However, this piece was inspired by North Indian culture, as well the cosmic and spiritual Indian perception, that changed the rationalist perception of Pierre Jeanneret in a substantial way. This item is raw and sturdy. Its rugged textures and bold lines define that radical character. Its presence is uncompromising and captivating. All parts are authentic. They are done in Indian teak. Rich in texture, the wood is vivid and comes in cognac colour. The surface is treated with shellac and there are several layers of original shellac. It provides smooth irregular gloss different from that of the sterile lacquerware nowadays. Charming irregularities show that each piece is unique. The sculpturality of this piece is conceived in the relationship of different geometrical shapes and their relationship. Side surfaces are wider at the bottom and more narrow as they get closer to the top. Upper corners are connected in a single point, forming an angle at the intersection of the edges. This shapes the upper element of the object, which consists of two symmetrical planes which share the same edge. Legend says that the slopped seat was shaped this way so the seamstresses could place their needles on it without losing them. I think the piece blends well with many interior styles. It can support pure, modern aesthetics by giving them a warmer character with its natural materials and warm colours. As a stool with sculptural qualities, it can be fitted in any interior space, as its functions are various. P!
