20th Century White American Walnut Single Barrel Club Chair by Vladimir Kagan

About the Item

A vintage Mid-Century Modern American single low back Barrel club, lounge chair made of hand crafted polished Walnut, designed by Vladimir Kagan and produced by Vladimir Kagan Designs, Inc. in good condition. The backrest of the center chair is slightly reclined with arched upholstered armrests, standing on four curved conical wooden feet. Newly upholstered in a white bouclé fabric from Pierre Frey. Wear consistent with age and use. Dated 1947, United States. Seat: 16.5" H x 20" W x 20" D Vladimir Kagan was an American / German furniture designer born in 1927 in Worms, Germany and passed away in 2016. Kagan’s father was a Russian cabinetmaker, where he learned his first basic skills of developing and designing furniture. In 1938, he emigrated the United States, where he started painting and manufacturing sculptures, but later on he focused more on design and architecture. In 1947, Kagan graduated as an architect from Columbia University in New York City. Later, in 1949, Kagan opened his first retail store, where he became extremely well-known. Marilyn Monroe was one of his first clients.

The seat backrest of the small Scandinavian center chair is slightly inclined with arched armrests, composed with a detachable seat cushion, standing on four short wooden feet. Manufacturer label at the bottom. Newly upholstered in a white bouclé fabric. Wear consistent with age and use. Circa 1960 - 1980, Sweden, Scandinavia. Measures: Seat: 19" H x 30" W x 23" D Carl Malmsten was a famous Swedish furniture designer, architect, and educator born in 1888, in Sweden and passed away in 1972. He collaborated with Gunnar Asplund and Uno Ahren. Malmsten has a lasting influence on Swedish design through the two schools which he founded, the Carl Malmsten furniture studies. In 1945, Malmsten was honored for a design with an inaugural Prince Eugen Medal in Sweden. O.H. Sjögren is one of the oldest Swedish furniture companies which is run by the fourth generation. The company was originally founded in circa 1870 by C. Rosén in Tranås, Sweden. In 1902, the Swedish manufacturer ( known today as O.H. Sjögren ) was taken over by Oskar Herbert Sjögren.
