Pierre Jeanneret PJ-SI-32-C Low Committee Chair / Authentic Mid-Century Modern

About the Item

Here the silhouette is strong. It is presented through the outline and shape of the piece. The relationship between the different shapes ensures a balanced composition. The careful alignment and proportions create an equilibrium, giving a sense of coherent design. Both tension and harmony create a unity, which is seen in the relationships of elements which are done in different materials. Solid wood is carrying the weight of the upholstered elements which visually appear even more heavy than they really are. All massive wood parts are authentic. They are done in Indian teak. Rich in texture, the wood is vivid and comes in chocolate colour. The surface is treated with shellac and there are several layers of original shellac. It provides smooth irregular gloss different from that of the sterile lacquerware nowadays. Charming irregularities show that each piece has been handcrafted and that the item is unique. Chandigarh items are famous for A-shaped legs. Many desks, chairs, armchairs, and sideboards have these legs, so the pieces remind us of sturdy structural constructions, such as bridge pillars that carry their weight, or some of Le Corbusier’s buildings. The A-shaped legs have sharper corners and are strict and sturdy in their geometry. Their angle and position show that Pierre Jeanneret, together with Jean Prouvé and Le Corbusier, had a structural, not decorative, expression. The upholstery is redone in a traditional way. As foam or wire springs were used for the original seat, we upholster it accordingly or per your choice. However, wire springs in this case are the better option. We recommend cow hides, vintage leathers, suede, or any other fabric. It is also possible for you to forward us your own upholstery. We do it with or without piping and with wire springs or high-quality foams. I think the piece blends well with many interior styles. It can support pure, modern aesthetics by giving them an inviting, though sharp, touch. As an easy chair with a strong character, it fits in a living area or in a reading corner. P! Galerie’s selection is mainly focused on rare French mid-century modern design artefacts by Pierre Jeanneret, Jean Prouvé, Le Corbusier, and Charlotte Perriand. Artefacts from our carefully curated collection are handpicked, and all traces and important indicators of authenticity are evaluated professionally. We try to preserve as much of patina as possible during the process of restoration, as it defines these historic pieces. Each object comes with a certificate of authenticity, offering you the opportunity to own a valuable artefact originating from a UNESCO-designated World Heritage Site. Not only do we cooperate with museums and offer auction houses our services and expert opinion, we also look forward to welcoming you as a private collector and connoisseur. • Office Cane Chairs by Pierre Jeanneret, PJ-SI-28-A, Chandigarh, 1955
    By Pierre Jeanneret
    Located in Antwerp, BE
Iconic "Office Cane Chairs" created by Pierre Jeanneret in the 1950s for the city of Chandigarh in India, the utopian city designed by his cousin Le Corbusier. Made of solid wood with seat and backrest in braided canework. Tilted backrest and asymmetric flat profiled "compass"-type double side leg assembly, with the legs connected by a crosspiece and supporting the armrests. Slanted, slightly curved backrest, separate from the seat. The seemingly floating back as well as the "compass"-type legs are very typical for this office chair. These specific features make the design even more powerful and interesting. The office chair was part of the furniture from the administrative buildings of Chandigarh. It's a true icon, one of the most famous pieces of all Chandigarh items. Jeanneret’s designs stand out for their essential forms and simple materials, a balance between modern European ideals and traditional Indian spirit. Another interesting and nowadays relevant fact about these and other Chandigarh chairs is that all pieces were made from the trees which were logged because the city was built, so an early adaptation of ecological thinking. We have four office chairs...
