Huge Original Holland & Son's Gothic Revival Antique Victorian Library Bookcase

We are delighted to offer this very rare hand made in England by the genius’s that were Holland & Son’s, Gothic Revival mahogany library bookcase circa 1860-1880 This piece is huge, you can easily fit an entire at home personal library, it splits into six easy to transport sections, all shelves are removable and or height adjustable, six of the shelves have the original brown leather, gold leaf embossed trim which matches the top of the bookcase, the shelves have been spaced out evenly, six with leather trim and six without, the other six show their lovely triple recessed edges with the middle being ebonised. This piece is a tour de force of craftsmanship, if you look at the pictures carefully you will see never ending carvings and ebony detail, this really is a gem Condition wise is very good for the age, there will be normal patina throughout but truly its in gallery fine condition. We have deep cleaned hand condition waxed and hand polished it from top to bottom Dimensions Height:- 264cm Width:- 280cm Depth:- 38cm Please note all measurements are taken at the widest point A History of Holland & Son’s Holland and Sons Antique Furniture (1803 – 1942) were extremely good cabinet makers and they specialised in fine quality furniture. Holland and Sons were founded in 1803 by William Holland and by the middle of 19th century, they were one of the main competitors to the furniture makers Gillow. Originally, They were cabinet makers and upholsterers called ‘Taprelland Holland’. In 1843 they changed their name to ‘Holland and Sons’ with William Holland in control, a relative of the well known Regency architect Henry Holland. Holland and Sons soon started to expand quickly and by 1851, they employed over 350 cabinet makers. By 1852 they took on the prestigious firm of Thomas Dowbiggin of 23 Mount Street, London, who had previously made the throne for Victoria’s Coronation. Holland and Sons worked successfully not only as furniture makers but also as undertakers and became responsible for the Duke of Wellington’s funeral. William Holland had the firm expanding at a rapid rate and became so well known, they became cabinetmakers and upholsters to the Queen. Their first commission was for Osborne House in 1845, supplying furniture in the Queen’s favourite design, ‘Louis XVI style’ from France. They continued to supply furniture for Osborne House and gained further commissions for Windsor Castle, Balmoral and Marlborough House. Holland and sons also worked for many leading institutions such as the reform Club (we have also supplied the reform club with our antique furniture in the past), the British Museum and the new Houses of Parliament. They were part of many of the important international exhibitions including London in 1862, Vienna in 1873, Paris in 1867 and 1872. They gained worldwide fame for their magnificent designs and quality cabinetmaking, throughout the Victorian era. Holland and sons stayed as a family run business, but sadly closed in 1942. Please note vintage period and original items such as leather seating will always have natural patina in the form of creasing and wear, we recommend annual waxing to ensure no moisture is lost, also hand dyed leather is not recommended to sit in direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time as it will dry out and fade.

Holland & Sons

One of the most influential and successful British furniture manufacturers of the Victorian era, Holland & Sons was renowned for its superb quality. It would be difficult to find collectors unfamiliar with Holland — or its rival, Gillows of Lancaster and London — as the company was a leader in neoclassical and Gothic furniture and interior design in the early to mid-1800s, using only the richest of hardwoods and the finest of metals. Antique Holland & Sons chairs, storage cabinets and tables frequently featured rare-specimen wood marquetry and engraved ivory inlays. The manufacturer’s designs grace the collections of museums around the world and can still be found in the royal homes of Europe.

Two cabinetmakers, Stephen Taprell and William Holland, opened a small joinery in 1815 near Buckingham Palace in London, England, and named it Taprell & Holland. Holland was a relative of the acclaimed Regency architect Henry Holland, the famous gardener and landscape architect Lancelot "Capability" Brown, and the former Member of Parliament Richard Bateman-Robson. This familial edge provided the needed influence for the company among the aristocracy, and their business saw immediate prosperity.

The firm traded under the name Taprell, Holland & Son for a period, and when Taprell retired in 1843, Holland took over the company and changed the name to Holland & Sons. Holland decided to diversify and began offering a broad range of services to the very wealthy — arranging furniture and household decoration rentals, managing funerals and even providing plumbing services. By 1851, they employed over 350 people.

Queen Victoria and Prince Albert commissioned Holland & Sons to supply the entire furnishings of their private homes — Osborne House, Balmoral Castle, Sandringham House and Marlborough House. The Monarch’s satisfaction with Holland and Son’s furnishings led to the company being granted the Royal Warrant of Appointment, affording the owners the opportunity to display the coveted “By Appointment of HM The Queen” mark and her Coat of Arms above the entrance to their offices.

Other Holland & Sons furniture commissions of note include the London Union Club, the Athenaeum Hotel in London, Arundel Castle in West Essex and the All Souls College in Oxford. The firm was also involved in the funerals of Prince Albert and the mother of Queen Victoria — both in 1861 — and contributed works to the 1901 coronation of Edward VII when they made the throne for his wife, Queen Alexandra.
