Twentieth Century Lapis Lazuli Signet Ring engraved "Van Vater" (From Father)

About the Item

Twentieth Century 14 Karat Blue lapis lazuli signet ring of German or Austrian origin, with initials SVC and a charming intaglio of a stylized castle. The band has a purity mark of 585 on one side and a maker's mark on the other. The ring is hand engraved in the inside of the band with "Van Vater, March 12 1985", German for "From Father, March 12 1985". The ring dates from 1975-1985. It was likely sold by the jeweler as a custom carved engraved signet ring; the lapis stone would have been set into the gold band and carved with the castle pictorial intaglio and customer’s requested initials. The sentimental hand engraved message indicates the ring was a gift from father to daughter or son. Signet rings were traditionally worn on the little finger of the non-writing hand and since the 20th century have been worn by both men and women. The ring is a size 4.75-5 US, the North-South measurement is .4 inches while the East-West measurement is approximately .7 inches.
