This lovely British 19th century watercolour landscape painting is by highly regarded and much exhibited artist, Edward Richardson. The artist was noted for his British and European scenes and this one was painted in 1859.The scene is the Rhine, Switzerland with a working barge meandering along. There’s also a fisherman, cattle on the bank and a village below a mountainous landscape. This is a lovely example of his work in original condition. It is signed and dated Edward Richardson 1859. Provenance. Robert Bunting The Rembrandt Gallery Liverpool. Condition. Watercolour on paper. Image 14 inches by 22 inches approx and in excellent condition. Framed behind glass, 29 by 21 inches approx. Edward M Richardson ANWS (1810-1874) landscape painter and watercolourist. Son of TM Richardson. Exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1856 and 1858 but mostly at the New Watercolour Society, 187 works, of which he became an associate in 1859 the year this was painted. Richardson painted landscapes in England, Scotland and Europe in a picturesque style similar to his brother TMR Junior. A sale of his watercolours was held at Christies on Feb 19 1864; his studio sale was held there May 25th 1875. He exhibited Royal Academy 2, Ridley Arts Club 67, New Watercolour Society 187.

He wrote Drawing in Pen and Pencil (1922), with James Laver, Design in the Theatre (1927) and with Rupert Mason and R Boyd Morrison he edited Robes of Thespis, Costume Designs by Modern Artists (1928).
