Henri Clamen
1930's French Barbizon School View of a Chateau in a Park Landscape

About the Item

French Barbizon School watercolour on paper view of a chateau in a park by Henri Clamen. The painting is not signed but was acquired from the artist's atelier with other signed paintings. A charming view of an imposing chateau sitting in the sunshine. On its facade a wisteria climbs. Leading out from the front door a long terraces leads away to a set of stone steps which descend to another grass terrace and in front of that a golden field of corn. To the side a long 'allée' of poplar trees and beneath them we can just see the edge of a formal 'parterre' garden. Clamen's light, free, impressionist style and his use of colour gives a vivacity, freshness and movement to the composition. A little jewel of a painting.

  • The Jurassic Coast, Dorset.
    By Ruskin Spear
    Located in Cotignac, FR
An English watercolour on paper coastal scene signed with initials 'RS' bottom right. Presented in its original gilt wood frame under glass with trade label to the backboard from Deighton’s Strand Gallery. This gallery was well-known during the 1930s as fine art dealers and frame makers – it was located off Trafalgar square. Though he often signed with his full name Ruskin Spear's work on paper 'Hammersmith Grove' is signed in the same initials as our work and hence the attribution. This work is also stylistically similar to his other drawings of seascapes and coastal landscapes. This is a charming and fresh view of a coastal landscape probably the Jurassic coast of Dorset or his beloved Cornwall. The vertiginous composition gives it an angular almost abstract form highlighted by the contrast between the colour of the rockface, the vegetation and the blue sea. The work is in nice condition and wonderful to have the original framing. Initially influenced by Walter Sickert, the Camden Town Group...

There is also a collection or accession number to the backboard. Atkins has captured the sculptural nature of the tree trunks as they have grown in the landscape giving the work a feeling of living, writhing things as well as an abstract feel in the composition. • Cookham Dean, A Post Impressionist Landscape, Homage to Cezanne
    By Bernard Meninsky
    Located in Cotignac, FR
An English Post Impressionist gouache of trees in a landscape by noted artist Bernard Meninsky. The painting is signed bottom right and presented in a very fine custom patinated and gilt frame with cloth insert, under glass. There is an exhibition label to the back of the frame, giving the painting's location 'Cookham Dean' in Berkshire near the home of noted contemporary of Meninsky, Stanley Spencer. Provenance: The Boydell Galleries, Liverpool. A charming work when Meninsky was clearly showing the influence and his love for the paintings of Cezanne. The simplification of forms, as well as the flattening of landscape and the use of colour to give perspective. An earlier work by Meninsky but important in his artistic journey to his evolving style. Bernard Meninsky (25 July 1891–12 February 1950) was a British painter of figures and landscapes in oils, watercolour and gouache, a draughtsman and a teacher. Meninsky was born in Konotop, modern-day Ukraine, where his father was a tailor and the family were Yiddish-speaking Ukrainian Jews. They moved to Liverpool when Bernard was six weeks old. Although Meninsky left school at the age of eleven, his talent for art was demonstrated by the sale of a drawing to a local comic postcard business. While working as an errand boy during the day, he attended free classes in art in the evenings, and these enabled him to gain a place at the Liverpool School of Art. He studied there from 1906 to 1911, being financed by a succession of scholarships. He attended summer courses at the Royal College of Art, London, in August 1909 and August 1910, and in 1911 he won a scholarship to study at the Académie Julian in Paris for three months. With financial support from the Liverpool Jewish community and the Jewish Educational Aid Society (JEAS), Meninsky studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London in 1912. His contemporaries there included David Bomberg, Isaac Rosenberg...

  • View of the Ovo Castle in the Moonlight, a 19th century Neapolitan gouache
    Located in PARIS, FR
Neapolitan gouaches appeared in the eighteenth century when tourism in the Naples area was developing: the discoveries of Herculaneum and Pompeii made this city a mandatory stop on the Grand Tour, the journey made by wealthy Europeans to complete their education. Generally small in size for ease of transport and affordable in price, these gouaches were the ideal travel souvenir that these tourists of the early days were bringing back to capture the idyllic landscapes they had discovered during their journey and to share them with family and friends upon their return at home. The Bay of Naples and the eruptions of Vesuvius are the favourite themes of these views. Here we have a view of the Ovo Castle, which was rebuilt on the island of Partenope, in the middle of the Bay of Naples and about a hundred metres from the shore by the Normans in the 12th century on antique ruins...
