Robert Littleford is a contemporary British artist of humble origins whose work captures the joy and tenderness of life’s simple pleasures. He was born in Oldham in 1940, to parents who were both poorly paid cotton workers. After leaving school he worked as a labourer, and at the age of 21 met his future wife, Hilary. She was working as a sewing machinist, living on a farm with her father. The couple married six months later, and settled in the local village. It was Hilary who encouraged Bob to pursue his passion to paint and with her support he gave up his job as a refuse collector and became a full time artist. Bob was thus self-taught and the style he developed was very much his own. His delicate and tender paintings capture scenes of family life, days at the seaside and children playing; unexceptional yet very special times. His paintings are executed with a lightness of touch and brilliant use of light and shade. With the unstinting support of his wife, Bob achieved great success, attracting the attention of art critics and national television. His early followers included the artist Helen Bradley, and the jazz musician and broadcaster Humphrey Lyttleton. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, and a Member of the British Watercolor Society. He has exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in 1973, the British Watercolor Society, Salford Municipal Art Gallery and other many provincial galleries throughout the UK. In the 1990s Bob suffered ill health and had to have a kidney removed. Hilary, now a mother of three, worked part time to support them. Slowly, Bob recovered and began to paint again until he was painting full time once more. His beloved wife died in 2007, and two years later, having battled with subsequent depression, Bob put on a major exhibition in Salford, which he dedicated to her. His work is now much sought after and is often sold before he has finished painting it. He is listed in David Buckman’s book, Artists in Britain since 1945. As an artist Robert Littleford is not protesting, not trying to convey a deep social meaning – he is usually presenting something beautiful, a little nostalgic and a little fun. © Big Sky Fine Art This is a view of the town of Oldham in Greater Manchester, seen from the green hills above it. The town is shown as a sprawling conurbation, with rows of terraced houses and industrial brick chimneys, tower blocks and the odd church spire. The town is almost a monotone of grey, with the more distant buildings almost fading into the soft pale sky above. There is a rear view of a man and his dog, looking down on the town, no doubt contemplating his lot. Above it all are five wild birds, soaring into the sky, free from the constraints of the busy scene below.

Gustav Melcher was a German painter and a pioneer in film, film criticism and film theory and created this clever little picture of the skyline of Venice with various vessels. Going by the various inscriptions an the backing paper, this drawing was made in 1918 when Gustav was twenty years old and passed on three years later to Gertrud Melcher on the 1. 2. 1921. I have no reasons to doubt this information. The small drawing is still in its unopened frame, so maybe there is more information to be discovered , however this will be the privilege of the next owner. The picture also has retained its original antique frame – note that it has lost over the years various sections of the gesso decoration. The very precisely executed drawing is most enjoyable to look at and doing so, remember you are looking through the eyes of a young man, who saw this foreign sea cape over a century ago. Thank you for your interest and please note, that I offer free worldwide shipping on all my items. Gustav Melcher began his studies at the Düsseldorfer Kunstakademie under Peter Janssen and Eduard von Gebhardt. Originaly he was interested in figurative and portrait painting, but after time he decided to pursue the depiction of land- and marinescapes. Durin his studies the young artist undertook trips to visit England, Scotland, Belgium and France and he joined the artist society Malkasten. It was in those days he would hold speeches to his colleges about this new invention called ‘Kintopp’ – Melcher was a great advocate of the moving pictures...

  • "Untitled (Dock Scene)" Watercolor on Paper, Local Scene, Buildings, Water
    Located in Detroit, MI
The idyllic atmosphere of this local dock scene falls within a couple of styles one being regionalism, an American realist modern art movement that included paintings, murals, lithographs, and illustrations depicting scenes of rural and small-town America primarily in the Midwest and frequently associated with Grant Wood and Thomas Hart Benton. The other style is romanticism wherein the scene depicted is a more desired or dramatic version of what actually is. “Untitled (Dock Scene)” is typical of a small town dock scene from Michigan where Culver lived or from places as far away as Maine, but what makes it important is its easy familiarity: water, gulls or terns, slanting wood shanties, scruffy dirt patches and course grasses. It is not idealized, but does set the tone of fresh air, the scream of birds and the sun on water. This piece has been professionally reframed with acid-free matting and museum glass. In a 1952 Detroit Free Press article, entitled “Artist Explains His Work,” Culver was asked why he painted the way he did. He stated: “I try to ‘see’ though not too exactly; I try to think though not too ponderously; I feel emotion yet I try not to become overwrought. I interpret rather than describe, and design rather than depict. I work with values, not light and shade; hence, when I am successful, I achieve substance rather than three-dimensional form, and this satisfies me as being wholly sufficient. In my work I wish to be serious without becoming a bore, exuberant without being frivolous, humorous without being silly. I believe that good paintings are conceived, not contrived; and I am interested in art much more than in pictures.” Charles Culver...
