About the Item
One of the "Women of Abstract Expressionism". Oil on canvas.
A New York Times review describes Buffie Johnson's work as located at the intersection of spiritualism, myth, and symbol, and influenced by the work of Carl Jung. She was included in Peggy Guggenheim's 1943 exhibition "31 Women", which was one of the first to show exclusively female artists. Johnson was a bit of a proto-feminist: A theme across her work is the attempt to represent "divine female power," Born to a wealthy family, she knew and associated with a stable of luminaries across the arts and letters.
Her work is in the collections of the Guggenheim, the Whitney, the Brooklyn Museum and the MFA, Boston, the Corcoran, the Baltimore Museum, and the Newark Museum, among others.

- Large TheloBy Diana KurzLocated in Lawrence, NYThe story of the post-WWII New York School artists is still being written. The role of women in the art of the day still needs examination and study. Kurz is one such example. Diana Kurz (b. 1938) was born into a wealthy Austrian-Jewish family whose business was Aryanized after the Anschluss forcing the family to flee, first to Spain, then across Europe, and finally to the United States. Brought up as a "normal" American girl, Kurz always wanted to be an artist. She studied at Brandeis, at Hunter with Robert Motherwell and received her MFA from Columbia. She received instruction from Hans Hoffmann, studied with Phillip Guston...Category
