Garden of Earthly Delight

About the Item

Garden of Earthly Delight – Jolanta Johnsson, experienced Polish artist, graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, PhD of fine arts, university teacher. She currently lives in Sweden. This is how she writes about this painting: In Garden of Earthly Delight blow green wind – is there such a thing? Can the wind actually possess a color? Well, if an artist wishes to capture the essence of the wind on canvas, they must conjure up a hue for it. Wind, in its simplest form, is the movement of air. We perceive its presence through the motion it imparts on objects, often fixating our gaze on trees. In autumn, we witness this phenomenon through the rustling of dried leaves. These delicate remnants of foliage are weightless, responding to every gust of wind that comes their way. However, during the summer months, when plants are at the peak of their vitality, when we feel like be in the garden of earthly delight, the wind gracefully sways their robust green leaves and stems. It is truly remarkable to witness the strength exhibited by the slender and seemingly fragile stems of certain plants. They proudly stand tall, defying the forces of nature. When the wind blows, they gracefully bend, only to swiftly return to their upright position with each gust. The rhythmic gusts set them in a mesmerising cyclic motion, causing their stems and leaves to ripple like living sine waves. And as if to enhance this spectacle, the sun bathes it in its warm, radiant light. Oh, the sheer beauty of it all! I have endeavoured to capture my awe and admiration for this enchanting display in my painting of my garden of earthly delight, in wich wind is green.

After his discharge from military service at the end of February 1946, he briefly studied playwriting with dramatist George McCalmon at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh. Thereafter, Jenkins spent four years studying with Japanese American artist Yasuo Kuniyoshi in New York City. His first solo exhibitions were held at Studio Paul Facchetti in Paris in 1954 and the Martha Graham Gallery in New York City in 1956. Over the past thirty years, numerous retrospectives have been curated across the globe and Jenkins’ work can found in national collections from Europe and the United States to Israel, Australia and Japan. The diversity of Jenkins’ work springs from a wealth of eclectic influences. Some of his earliest works included what he called "interior landscapes", influenced by ancient natural forms. Frequent student visits to the Frick Collection in New York fostered a love of the great masters, and lingering student visits to the renowned Eastern collection of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City evoked powerful sympathy for a monumental Chinese fresco...

    Located in New York, NY
Alan Fenton (1927 - 2000) Untitled, 1958-1960 Oil on canvas 90 x 84 inches Fenton's quiet and contemplative nonobjective paintings and drawings were widely recognized for their demanding yet understated means of revealing a serious and sober essence. He identified greatly with Mark Rothko, a friend, as well as Adolph Gottlieb and Jack Tworkov, with whom he had studied privately. Fenton painted in New York City in the late 50's as the explosion of Abstract Expressionism turned into a rebellion against gestural, emotional painting. More concerned about his art than his posture, he expanded upon a tradition in painting with influences as diverse as Whistler and Turner as well as Ad Reinhardt and Joseph Albers. Alan Fenton was born in Cleveland in 1927, studied at the Cleveland School of Art, The Arts Students League, The New School, and at NYU, earning his BFA at Pratt Institute, where he later taught painting for many years. At seventeen, Fenton served in the Merchant Marines where he began a career as a professional boxer, a skill he had honed on the streets. He moved successfully through the graphic design business en route to becoming a painter in New York at the height of the art revolution of the fifties and sixties. Fenton enjoyed success with his subtle washes and pencil drawings as well as large abstract...
