About the Item

Lilly Muth's geometric abstractions are colourful works full figures that of space such as the distance, shape, size, and relative position of figures. Her use of colour is bold yet contemporary and her works are defined by clear lines and the painting of circles, squares and overlapping shapes. The spatial perspectives in her works leads the eye to rooms of colour, that are placed on grey and beige backgrounds, leaving the colour space to breathe and unfold. Her large formats make an impact and are beautiful wow factors paintings for contemporary interiors. Lilly Muth's use of two halves of a circle in her paintings, which overlap or melt into each other, is a fascinating artistic representation of Plato's concept of love. Plato's philosophy on love, as described in "Symposium," indeed explores the idea of humans seeking their other half to achieve a sense of completeness. Here's how Lilly Muth's art aligns with this concept. Symbolism of the Circle Halves: The use of two halves of a circle in her paintings can be seen as a visual metaphor for the idea that each individual is only part of a whole and seeks to reunite with their missing counterpart. This concept reflects Plato's notion that love is about the reunion of these halves. Overleap and Fusion: The overlapping or melting of the circle halves in her art might represent the process of two individuals coming together in love. As these halves merge, they create something new, symbolizing the transformative power of love in Plato's philosophy. Incomplete Wholeness: Plato's idea that the reunited halves do not form a complete whole again is intriguing. It suggests that even in love and unity, individuals retain their distinct identities. Lilly Muth's art might capture this aspect by portraying the circles as separate but interconnected, emphasizing the uniqueness of each half. Formation of Something New: The notion that when the two halves meet, they create something new aligns with the creative and innovative aspect of love. This idea may be symbolized in her artwork by the resulting shapes or patterns formed by the merging circles, signifying the unique union of two individuals. Indeed, Lilly Muth's art is a fusion of colour theory, geometry and spatial manipulation, resulting in visually captivating and impactful abstract works. Her skilful combination of these elements makes her paintings suitable and striking choices for contemporary interiors. They not only add aesthetic value but also provoke thought and engage viewers in a unique visual experience. Overall, Lilly Muth's incorporation of Plato's concept of love into her art adds depth and philosophical resonance to her work. It invites viewers to contemplate the nature of love, human connection, and the transformative power of relationships, all through the medium of geometric abstraction and visual symbolism. Lilly Muth conveys emotional or expressive feelings and ideas without reliance upon or reference to recognizable objective forms and thus wants the viewer of her art to search for their own connections to her oil paintings. Lilly Muth's geometric abstractions are concerned with a search for universal values and aesthetics. Her use of color is bold yet contemporary and her works are defined by clear lines and the painting of circles, squares and overlapping shapes. • Orange Circle
    By Paul Reed
    Located in Saratoga Springs, NY
Signed & dated Verso. 1965 Paul Reed in 1970. He favored “staining” untreated canvas. Paul Reed, the last surviving member of the Washington Color School, who explored the complexities of color and form in vibrant bio-morphic and hard-edge abstract paintings, died on Sept. 26 at his home in Phoenix. He was 96. His death was confirmed by his daughter, Jean Reed Roberts. Mr. Reed acquired his public identity as an artist when he was included, along with Gene Davis, Kenneth Noland, Morris Louis, Thomas Downing and Howard Mehring, in “The Washington Color Painters,” a landmark traveling exhibition that began at the Washington Gallery of Modern Art in 1965. All of the other painters had been shown, the year before, in “Post-Painterly Abstraction,” a 31-artist exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art organized by the critic Clement Greenberg in an effort to write a new chapter in the historic march of abstract art. Like his fellow Washington artists, Mr. Reed rejected the hot, gestural approach of Abstract Expressionism and explored color and abstract forms in a cooler mode. Working with diluted acrylic paint, in discrete series that methodically explored formal issues, he created luminous fields of color by letting the paint bleed into, or stain, untreated canvas. “I have a saying: Pollock dripped, Frankenthaler poured,” he told The Washington Post in 2011, referring to the artist Helen Frankenthaler. “Morris Louis poured. Howard Mehring sprinkled. I blot.” In his first stained series, “Mandala,” color radiated from a circular central image. The nearly 100 paintings in his “Disk” series, which he called “a matrix for exploiting color,” consisted of a central circle and two triangles positioned at the corners of the canvas. Over the next decade he moved to hard-edge geometric zigzags and stripes in the vertical “Upstart” series, color grids and shaped canvases that allowed for more complex experiments in form and color relations. He also made welded steel sculptures and, in the “Quad” series of the 1980s, collaged photographs. “Reed was, in a sense, the ‘little master’ of that first batch of Washington colorists,” the critic Benjamin Forgey wrote in The Washington Post in 1997. “He was a latecomer — he didn’t turn seriously to painting until he was in his mid-30s — but he never considered becoming anything other than an abstract painter. And when he was ready to show, in his early 40s, he was a very good abstract painter indeed.” Mr. Reed gave himself a more modest assessment in an interview with NPR last year. “I’m sort of low man on the totem pole of that group of six,” he said. Paul Allen...
