John George Todd
Crossing the Water. Mid 19th Century Realist Painting. Ecouen school.

1850's

About the Item

Mid 19th century Realist ink, watercolour and gouache portrait on paper of a young man in a field by John George Todd. The painting is signed G Todd bottom left as was his usual manner. The work is presented in a period frame with a trade label to the reverse from Rouen, not far from Todd's atelier, and therefore may be the original framing. This painting is a fine example of realism. The subjects of these works often depicted the working class in their everyday lives. Often characterful, as is this picture, the subject is viewed scratching his head as he tries to work out how to navigate the water in his path. John George Todd was a British artist born in Canterbury on 31st March 1832 and died in Ipswich in 1898. Early on during his journey of self discovery as an artist Todd moved to Ecouen in France and was taken under the wing of fellow artist Chialiva. It was here that he became part of a thriving artistic community. He set up house in rue de la Beauvette next to artist Auguste Schenck. Todd's house was known as the most artistic in the town, beautifully decorated and styled with amazing textiles, artefacts, objets, bronzes and China porcelain. In his atelier he had painted a rural scene of a boy and a girl looking towards a far off town lit by the last rays of the setting sun. In Ecouen in his greenhouse and garden Todd cultivated the majority of the flowers that we find in his paintings. Emile Zola warmly commended him on this and his paintings of 'natures mortes' exhibited at the 1866 Salon at the Palais des Champs Elysées. John George became one of the great specialists of 'natures mortes' and was known as 'the man who paints flowers'. As such he was invited to exhibit at the Royal Academy in 1888 as well as at other London galleries. So highly thought of was Todd that a very large number of fellow artists attended his wife's funeral, including Thomas Couture; Auguste Schenck; Paul Soyer; Otto Weber; Theophile Duverger; Auffray; Dansaert; Hugo and Seignac.
