About the Item

Adolf Tièche (Swiss, * 12.4.1877 Bern, † 8.11.1957 Bern) Silsersee - Die Ruinen von Surlej bei Silvaplana, 1923 (Lake of Silvaplana – The Ruins of Surlej by Silvaplana, 1923) • Oil on canvas ca. 75 x 99 cm • Frame ca. 89 x 113 cm • Signed and dated 1923 lower right • Label verso : ' Für Hotel Gotthard ; Silsersee - Die Ruinen von Surlej bei Silvaplana ' Worldwide shipping for this object is complimentary - There are no additional charges for handling & delivery. Adolphe Tièche was born on the 12th of April, 1877 in Bern, Switzerland into an architect’s family. He too was trained as an architect, but developed at a young age a passionate interest in architectural drawing and later in fine art. At the age of 23 whilst visiting Paris, he decided to become an artist and joined the Académie Colarossi. He then travelled and painted extensively in Europe and North Africa to then return to Bern, joining the ranks of the Group known as the ‘Berner Schule’ led by Ferdinand Hodler. He also was a very active member of the Swiss art scene, taking on various mandates and commissions. Today his alpine landscapes and detailed archtectual cityscapes are regularly traded and widely collected. He died in 1957 in his beloved Berne. The painting on offer depicts the ruins of the Nikolaus Church of Surley, situated along the shores of the Lake of Silvaplana in the Grisons, Switzerland. In 1834 the Nikolaus Church and its outbuildings were catastrophically flooded and the woodwork such as the pulpit, pews and beams, as well as the bronze belles were re-claimed and used to build the church San Rochus in in the nearby village of Champfèr. The ruines stood for just over 120 years and were demolished and cleared away in 1955. The ruins were painted for a certain ‘Hotel Gotthard’ – Unfortunaly there are quite a few Hotels in Switzerland with that name and further research will be the privilege of the future owner. Alphons (Alfons) Müller (Swiss, * 24.8.1898 Mitlödi, † 8.6.1955 Biel) ' Im Häfeli ' The small harbor at the Lake of Biel / Bienne in Switzerland • Oil on artist board, ca. 47 x 38 cm • Frame, ca. 54 x 45 cm • Signed bottom right Worldwide shipping for this object is complimentary - There are no additional charges for handling & delivery. Alphons Müller lived and worked in the watch industries in Biel/Bienne in Switzerland up to about 1933. He then decided to become a full-time artist and painted landscapes, still lifes, portraits/nudes in various styles up to his early death in 1955. Alphons Müller was the proverbial hardworking bohemian artist. He lived in a small cold room above a pup and often struggled to make ends meet. On one hand he would paint commercial views of local beauty spots - often of the Lake of Bienne. These paintings were generally executed using very thin paint layers (to make the expensive material last longer ...) in a very bright impressionist style. On the other hand, he would create intelligent, generous and deep reaching images - especially during the war. In the late thirties he meets his two loyal patrons, the baker Werner Gass and the pharmacist...

A most pleasant depiction of a typical ‘Stöckli’ in bright sunshine with the a few shirts on the washing line, somewhere in the Canton of Berne in Switzerland. Such small cottages would sit next to the large farmhouses and upon retirement the old couple would move into it, to make room for the next generation to take up residence in the main building and run the farm. The Painting is in pleasingly good and clean condition, with no damage or restoration Ernst Linck was an important representative of the "Berner Schule" (Bernese school) led by the famous Ferdinand Hodler, which also included Traugott Senn, Emil Cardinaux, Eduard Boss...
