Circa 1800 seaside summer day

1800

About the Item

Alexander Nasmyth (1758-1840) is a renowned Scottish artist and early plein art landscape artist, whose six children also became well known artists. Work by Nasmyth is highly valued. This painting has been attributed to the period of time Nasmyth painted landscapes, and in the same style. The treatment of the trees, the landscape and figures are reminiscent of Nasmyth's work. This painting of sailboats and town with figures viewing the scene from the hillside above, is an early oil painting in the period of Alexander Nasmyth, circa 1800. The figures retain their bright color against the muted tones of the overcast day. It is painted in fine detail of a town with spires, brick houses and a domed building that may be recognizable. The sailboats and viewers suggest a light breeze on a summer British day. Acquired in Scotland and imported to the US by Saltire Gallerie, suggesting its Scottish roots in the Nasmyth family and art. The painting shows its age with stable craquelure throughout, that is most evident close up. There is newer frame and the and the work has likely been re-lined and re-stretched at some point. The canvas sight is about 15.25" by 11", and 14.5" by 19" with the frame. In overall good, stable condition consistent with its considerable age. Ready to hang! The work has been re-framed and possibly re-lined.
