Emile Albert Gruppe was a very well known Cape Ann, Massachusetts painter who founded his own Gruppe Summer School in 1942. He was born in Rochester, NY in 1896 and studied at the Art Students League in New York, the National Academy of Design and in Paris. His scenes of Gloucester and Rockport are famous images in the American art scene. Gruppe exhibited extensively throughout the United States between 1913 and 1967. This oil on board, dating to ca. 1930’s depicts a town scene likely north of Boston, but certainly somewhere in New England. It has a great sense of color and light and shadow. It is framed in a period gold frame of delicate and unusual design, indicative of the great work of art that it is. The oil itself is signed lower right and measures 12” x 16”. Including the frame, the overall dimensions are 15 1/2” x 19 1/2”. It is in very good condition, with no issues to report and ready to display on your wall of choice.

- Lovely Antique European Cathedral Garden Oil Painting, Unsigned, ca 1920Located in Baltimore, MDAlthough seemingly unsigned, this European Cathedral setting was painted by a well-trained artist. It dates to around 1920, about one hundred years ago. The summer scene is a back garden to a large cathedral and probably in Italy. Often, European churches and cathedrals have contemplative gardens that are off to the side or behind the grand edifices that are usually busy with people. This seems to be the case in this painting. A single statue with a backdrop of cypress trees provides a calm respite along a winding path to the historic church beyond. The artist chose this space to paint a reflective scene while still showing off some of the grandeur of the church and likely cathedral beyond. The Renaissance or Baroque buildings are very nicely rendered in a somewhat Impressionist manner. The overall composition with its vertical format is quite unique and alluring. It could certainly remind the viewer of similar scenes that were witnessed on past trips to Europe. The painting is oil on canvas and measures 12 1/2” x 18”. It has a wood gold frame with simple architectural lines that seem to frame it nicely, without being fancy or overbearing. Overall framed dimensions are 16” x 21 1/2”. The painting is in very good condition with no apparent repairs or damage. There is a small vertical mark below the statue, but that isn’t too noticeable, as is the vague vertical streak in the bottom lower right on the paint surface. That may be a thin varnish drip from years ago. The frame is generally in good condition with very minor discolorations in a few spots. All in all, the paintIng presents very well as an antique from Europe...Category
