Franz Paula De Ferg
18th century Old Master oil painting - Travellers at rest in a sunset landscape

About the Item

18th century old master painting depicting a peaceful countryside scenery at sunset with a fortified town visible in the distance attributed to Franz Paula de Ferg In the present jewel-like painting, de Ferg captures a moment of respite amidst the journey of life. Two travelers can be seen sitting to the left, pausing for a moment of rest, perhaps reflecting on the path they've traveled and the one that lies ahead. Meanwhile, a lone traveler atop a magnificent white horse engages in conversation with a couple, perhaps he is asking them for directions. In the distance, the landscape unfolds in all its glory, a majestic mountain bathed in the warm hues of the setting sun. The golden light casts a serene glow over the scene, imbuing it with a sense of tranquility and beauty. Amidst the natural splendor, a fortified village stands as a testament to human resilience and ingenuity, a beacon of civilization amidst the untamed wilderness. Above it all, the sky is adorned with impressive white clouds, their billowing forms adding a touch of drama and grandeur to the scene. It's a moment frozen in time, where the beauty of nature and the fleeting connections between fellow travelers converge, reminding us of the profound beauty and poignancy of the journey we all share. The painting has been painted on a copper support, which has ensured that the vibrancy and intensity have survived so well through the centuries. Franz de Paula Ferg, was born on May 2, 1689 in Vienna and is also known as Francis Paul Ferg. He distinguished himself as an Austrian painter, draughtsman, and printmaker. His artistic journey began under the tutelage of his father, the esteemed history painter Adam Pancraz Ferg. After initial training, Ferg further honed his skills under the guidance of various mentors in Vienna. Notably, he studied under Joseph Orient, a renowned landscape painter, where he immersed himself in the depiction of landscapes and the integration of figures into his compositions. Ferg's oeuvre primarily focuses on capturing scenes of everyday life, particularly interactions in bustling markets and tranquil landscapes, of which the present painting is a lovely example. His style bore influences from notable artists such as Callot and Le Clerc, whose engravings left a lasting imprint on his artistic expression. Furthermore, his studies under Hans Graaf and interactions with landscape-painter Alexander Thiele enriched his artistic vocabulary, leading to the development of his signature style characterized by meticulous detail and vibrant colors. His artistic legacy endures through his works, which can be found in private collections and in esteemed public galleries worldwide, including those in Brunswick, Dresden, and Vienna. The oil on copper measures ca. 33 cms by 26,5 cms and with its frame ca. 41 by 34.5 cms. Literature on the artist: E. Herrmann-Fichtenau, 'Ferg, Franz de Paula', 'The Dictionary of Art', ed. j. • Large 17th century religious family painting - Mary with Christ and Anna
    Located in Antwerp, BE
17th century Old Master painting depicting the Infant Christ with Mary and St. Anne attributed to Nicolas de Liemaker The artist of the present work wonderfully captured the loving gaze of Maria, looking in awe at her child. One can sense the tenderness and love in her eyes. The eyes of Christ appears to be filled with wisdom and love and a finely painted aura crowns his and his mother's heads. St. Anne, Mary's mother, gently holds the infant whilst gazing adoringly at him. The painting is not only a beautiful depiction of Christ and his mother and grandmother, but also a sweet image of the tender bond between a mother's and their children. The vibrant and soft colours of the fabric create a soft cocoon around the figures and seem to further emphasis the beauty and importance of the depicted scenery and its protagonists. Nicolaas de Liemaecker (also spelled as Liemaker or Liemackere) was a Flemish painter born in Ghent in 1601. He was also known under the name Nicolaas Roose. His father was Jacobus de Liemaecker, a painter upon glass. Nicolaas is reported to have been trained by his father and Gaspard de Crayer II (1), an apprenticeship with Otto Van Veen has also been suggested. In 1624 he worked at the Court of the Bishop of Paderborn and for Ferdinand of Bavaria. He later returned to his native city, where he focused on religious and historical paintings. He was a very accomplished and celebrated artist who attained a high rank in his profession. He witnessed the baptisms of Pieter and Janne-Marie Van Hulle...

  • The Triumph of the Infant Bacchus, workshop of H. Van Balen, 16th c. Antwerp
    By Hendrick van Balen
    Located in PARIS, FR
The Triumph of the Infant Bacchus, Workshop of Hendrick Van Balen (1575-1632) Antwerp, c.1630 Oil on copper, h. 28 cm (11.02 in), w. 35 cm (13.78 in) A large Roman 17th century golden painted frame Framed: h. 52 cm (20.47 in.), w. 58 cm (22.83 in) Our finely painted work depicts The Triumph of the Bacchus as a young boy and is one of the most popular mythological subjects in Antwerp at the beginning of the 17th century. Feasting, wine and fun are the themes that constantly appeal to the public. Thus unfolds before our eyes on our painting the procession composed of nymphs, baccantes, fauns, satyrs and children, their bodies naked, partially covered with brightly coloured draperies that help to brighten up the parade. Playing various instruments, dancing and drinking, while carrying vases and poles adorned with grapevines, participants to the rhythm of a noisy brass band make their way to an ancient temple standing on the right. The exaggerated gestures convey to us the frenzy of the excited crowd. The Child Bacchus follows the joyous procession, carried by satyrs and nymphs, crowned with ivy and joyfully raising a cup of wine. In the foreground, the drunken participants leave the procession, the children on the left and the group of bacchantes and satyrs on the right are resting among various objects scattered at their feet: cups, vases, ewers bear witness to the festivities in progress. In the background, a hilly landscape stretches out on the horizon, a semblance of calm that contrasts with the bustle of the foreground. The artist strives to multiply the many details, whether it be figures, costumes, flowers or vegetation, in order to demonstrate his know-how and the perfection of his execution. The acidulous palette with fresh and varied colours is characteristic of Hendrick Van Balen's works. There are several versions identical to ours with similar dimensions painted by Hendrick Van Balen and his workshop. He often painted small figures taken from scenes from the Bible or classical mythology, on paintings whose backgrounds and landscapes were painted by Josse de Momper...

  • A 17th Century Mythological Scene
    Located in Stockholm, SE
This small yet captivating painting, crafted on a copper plate, dates back to the mid-1600s and was created by a Flemish artist. Subject Matter: The central figure in the artwork is Mercury, easily identified by his symbolic attributes like winged sandals, petasus, and caduceus. Beside him is a likely female figure, characterized by her attire and absence of weaponry. The depicted scene could represent two mythological tales: Mercury and Calypso: This interpretation suggests the artwork shows the moment Zeus sends Mercury to Calypso's island, Ogygia. Mercury is there to order Calypso to release Ulysses, whom she saved from a shipwreck but kept captive. The lush, wooded background and the three distant figures could hint at Ulysses' farewell to Calypso. Mercury and Herses: Another interpretation could be a scene from the love story of Mercury and Herses. The background figures might symbolize the sisters returning from a procession, while the forefront could be the initial meeting between Mercury and the most beautiful sister, Erse. Artistic Inspiration: The painting's landscape and setting are heavily influenced by the early 17th century Northern European art trends, especially the works of Jan Brueghel the Elder. However, the artwork stands apart with its unique luminescence in detailing and a distinctive approach to depicting figures. While the exact origin and artist remain somewhat mysterious, the style and treatment of light hint towards works close to Josse de Momper...
