About the Item
Victor Forssell, who was the son of the unmarried miller's daughter Beata Forssell. Forssell was a student of Johan Edvard Bergh and Per Daniel Holm at the Art Academy in Stockholm 1866–1876. In the summers he lived together with Per Ekström in a gazebo near Sickla and also hung out with Carl Larsson. In 1877 he made a study trip to Düsseldorf, Paris, Brussels, Antwerp and London. In the years 1878–1879, he visited almost all the regions in southern and central Sweden and drew manor seats for a magazine. It was during this time he paited this piece in 1881 Winter at Marienlyst and named the painting hereafter.
The hotel Marienlyst is named after Frederik the Fifth's queen, Juliane Marie, and was founded in 1861. The hotel quickly became recognized throughout Europe and had among its distinguished guests both princes and royalty in addition to Copenhagen's upper class who made their way up the coast to enjoy the summer in Öresund.
In 1887 Forsell became a member of the Academy of Arts. Travels during the 1890s took him to Denmark, Norway, England and Scotland. A collective exhibition at Liljevalch's art gallery in 1921 made him recognized by the critics and known by a wider public.
Work Forssell was a landscape painter and usually painted small pictures with motifs from Sweden's cities and countryside. Influenced by French plein air painting, he developed a fragile and intimate style with a feeling for color values and air tones. He is represented in the National Museum, Norrköping Art Museum and Gothenburg Art Gallery.
