Gustave Jean Jacquet
The Easter Bonnet - Romantic Portrait Oil Painting by Gustave Jean Jacquet

c.1890

About the Item

Signed oil on panel portrait circa 1890 by French Romantic painter Gustave Jean Jacquet. The work depicts a young redheaded woman wearing a red velvet jacket lined with white fur. On her head she is wearing an Easter bonnet trimmed with leaves. Signature: Signed lower right Dimensions: Framed: 14"x11.5" Unframed: 10"x7.5" Provenance: Baron Fine Art - Chester (purchased 1990 by the previous owner) Jacquet was a pupil of Bouguereau. He began exhibiting at the Salon de Paris in 1865, receiving a third-class medal in 1868 with his Army Outing in the 16th Century, and a first-class medal in 1875. He was decorated with the Légion d'Honneur in 1879. Jacquet's Salon debut, The Reverie, was painted in the style of Bouguereau. In his small canvases depicting genre subjects, he evoked the elegance of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, with a conscientious attention to detail. In his portraits, he sometimes preferred to redress his models in the shimmering costumes of the 16th century. He worked tirelessly, producing many paintings, imbuing them with a sometimes exaggerated minuteness. His principal preoccupation lay in capturing scenes from everyday life in Paris, portraying its citizens and, above all, the women of the city. There is a discernible influence of Raffaëlli, although Goeneutte lacks the latter's expressive intensity. Examples of his work include Classroom, Boulevard de Clichy in the Snow, Arrival of the Wedding Party...
