About the Item

Iconographie des Orchidees Jean Linden (1817-1898) Brussels, 1885-1894 Chromolithographs “Orchid Fever” was not just a 19th century phenomenon. To this day the orchid has remained one of the most celebrated, sought after, and frustrating botanical species. Whether prized as cultivated show entry or a bridal bouquet, the orchid has won international acclaim. It was just such enthusiasm for this beguiling plant that led a young man to become a famed ‘orchid hunter’. Linden search took him around the world looking for orchids. In all he is credited with bringing over 1100 species back to Belgium. Several species bear his name. After a decade of traveling through mountains and jungles, Linden returned to Brussels in 1845. With the help of his son, Lucien, he established the Horticulture Internationale, a major commercial enterprise. Reference: Great Flower Books. Sacheverell Sitwell and Wilfrid Blunt. The Atlantic Monthly Press. New York, 1990.
