Original linen backed stone lithograph: Antar was a 6th-century Arabian warrior-poet. Opera was in rehearsal at the Opera in 1914, when the composer died at the age of 36 on the very day war was declared. The performance was canceled and the opera was not given until nearly 7 years later. Excellent condition. Music: Gabriel Dupont. Theatre National de l'Opera. This is an Art Nouveau period French advertising poster for the opera Antar. This poster features a large image illustrating a scene from the opera, showing a triumphant knight on a horse standing on large rock. Surrounding him to the front and sides is a dully colored rocky landscape, and on the left side of this landscape is a glimpse of a battle scene. Above and behind him the sun touches the mountains creating colors of oranges, pinks, and greens, which creates a dynamic contrast with the bright, blue sky in the background. This stone lithograph was created by M.G. Rochegrosse.

    By Georges Redon
    Located in Dallas, TX
Antar, artist: Georges Redon. Size: 49 x 90. Year: 1905. Archival linen backed in very good condition; ready to frame. Original linen backed stone lithograph: GEORGES REDON (1869-1943) BOULOGNE S. MER. 1905. 41 3/4x29 1/2 inches, 55 1/4x75 cm. While on the surface this appears as an innocent enough image promoting travel to one of France's premier beach resorts, it is, in fact, also one of the most suggestive Belle Epoque posters. Despite the staid Victorian style of swimwear in red, the relationship between the woman and the waves is hard to ignore. Like all great posters, once it has the viewer's attention it also advertises many of the other pleasures and attractions available in Boulogne. Listing off a few of the wonderful things that you can do in Boulogne is magnificent theatre, casinos, golf, horse races, pigeon shooting...

  • Tom Sawyer Detective by Mark Twain: 19th C. Framed Colored Poster
    By Edward Penfield
    Located in Alamo, CA
This lithographic colored advertising poster entitled "Tom Sawyer Detective, A New Story by Mark Twain" was created by Edward Penfield in 1897 for Harper & Brothers. The artist's signature appears in the plate in the lower left. The poster depicts a man in a long black bathing suit sitting with his knees up, aimlessly smoking a cigarette, but looking out of the corner of his eyes at a woman in a olive green dress and tan blouse and a black hat, who sits to his left with her head propped in her left hand and a bored or concerned look on her face. The look on the faces of the couple creates an air of mystery. The title of the book is printed in red in the upper left and the issue "Harper's August" in bold letters in the lower poster. The poster promotes a new book by Mark Twain that was published initially in two issues of Harper's Monthly and also in book form by Harper & Brothers in 1896. It is a sequel to "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer", published in 1876, "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn", published in 1884, and "Tom Sawyer Abroad", also published in 1894. The plot of the book involves Tom Sawyer attempting to solve a mysterious murder. The story is told using the first-person narrative voice of his friend Huck Finn...
