Jared Last
Oculus Series Ovoid 6 Lenses

2021

About the Item

Jared’s work combines his interest in colour, pattern, architecture and the unique optical properties of glass to create both functional and sculptural works that invite investigation and engagement. Subverting the traditional function of the vessel and glass as a primarily functional medium while emphasizing the subtle phenomena of the material, he creates works that draw viewers inwards, allowing them to experience glass from a more contemporary perspective. Jared is the winner of the 2022 RBC Award for Glass Canada's top award for glass. Jared Last is from Calgary, Alberta, Canada and has been working in glass since 2011. He recently completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts with distinction in Glass at the Alberta College of Art and Design in April of 2016. Jared has also had the opportunity to study internationally after receiving scholarships to attend classes at both the Studio at the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, New York, and at Pilchuck Glass School, in Stanwood, Washington. His work has been recognized by both the Glass Art Association of Canada, as well as by members of the international Glass Art Society. Jared's work combines his interests in architecture, pattern and phenomena to create visually engaging objects that subvert traditional form and function while emphasizing the unique optical properties of glass.

  • Mandala Zooxanthellae, Modern Canadian Glass Sculpture, 2019
    Located in Toronto, ON
This work of art is inspired by the tiny plant-like organisms called zooxanthellae live in the tissues of many animals including corals, anemones, jellyfish, sponges and foraminifera. These microscopic algae capture sunlight and convert it into energy just like plants to provide essential nutrients to the corals. When under stress, such as high temperature caused by global warming of the oceans and seas, they will die and leave their host, a process known as bleaching. Alex Anagnostou...

  • Probability Deep Blue 4 - elegant, curved, abstract, glass, wall sculpture
    By John Paul Robinson
    Located in Bloomfield, ON
John Paul Robinson creates original contemporary wall sculptures from coloured glass that are filled with light. This piece features elegant arched deep blue tubes of glass that are polished to a smooth finish and overlap one another to create a dynamic composition. The Canadian artist often explores themes related to how the world works. This is one of a series intended to represent the dual nature of light as both a particle and a wave. In physics, the wave nature of light is referred to as a "probability wave". “The thickness of the glass and curvature of the lens conspire to create their own optical effect. As your gaze moves across the piece it causes the small grains of coloured glass to shift just a bit. Starry Starry Night...
