Michael Gustavson
Cold Stone ceramic indoor/outdoor sculpture

2020

About the Item

California sculptor Michael Gustavson's "Cold Stone" is a rather minimal sculpture made from hand-built ceramic and glazed in a beautiful range of greens, earth tones and blues. It can be placed indoors for a unique decorative accent, and the ceramic is suitable for outdoor placement in temperate climates. Michael Gustavson graduated from San Jose State University with a Master of Fine Arts in 1980. A master in raku ceramic using a wide range of glaze colors and textures, he creates vessels, wall sculptures, and substantial totemic forms to be placed in the garden. All are intricate exercises in the harmony of form, texture, and color. Equally successful as free-form organic sculptures and abstract paintings, the pieces incorporate lusciously textured glazes that perfectly complement the surface quality and shape of his compositions. In his most recent series of powerful tectonic forms created for indoor or outdoor spaces, Gustavson continues to express his painterly textural compositions using his extensive palette of glazes in his California studio. Michael Gustavson's artworks are included in private and public collections throughout the world. Such major corporations as IBM, Kaiser Permanente, Seagate, Cranbrook Museum, and Eastman Kodak own pieces by the artist. Most recently his work has been sold to collectors in London, England and Norway.

  • "Receiving (72-inch)" abstract bronze sculpture
    Located in Glen Ellen, CA
Cast bronze sculpture with classic green patina on black marble base. Edition of 3 at this size. Other sizes and patina finishes are also available by commission, please inquire for more details. Pisapia's "Expedition Series," inspired by sea voyages, is about meeting life’s challenges with courage and purpose. It connects to the idea expressed by J.W. Goethe: “Character is formed in the stormy billows of the world.” Taking up life’s tasks can require one to go against the wind. The feeling of determination to achieve and continue steering through obstacles is poured into the pure forms; a dynamic balancing of the straight and curve on different axes. "With a rounded starting point," Pisapia explains, "I add on a variety of disparate angles, diverse curves, and twisting planes. I carve and smooth the surfaces, bringing out particular tensions and transitions." Flavius Valone Pisapia is an Italian-Romanian artist born in Bucharest in 1981. He completed his higher education in the UK, with an MA in Transpersonal Arts & Therapy, 2014; a Diploma in Transformative Arts, 2011; and a BA (Hons) in Film and Video, 2005. Pisapia studied sculpture throughout his higher education and appreciated several sculptor mentors in the UK. Since 2016, he has resided in India, where he is currently an artist in residence at Studio Sukriti in Jaipur. He has had several solo exhibitions in India and his artwork is found in private collections worldwide. "It's important for me to experience the world at a deeper level by penetrating the veil of the senses. Through an immersive process the essence, beauty and the pure form of an idea are gradually revealed to me. The emerging awareness flows into my artwork imbuing it with a higher reality. To achieve this awareness in my creative process, I go through three stages: imagination, inspiration and intuition." - Flavius Pisapia

  • "Moonlight" unique bronze sculpture
    By Gerard Tsutakawa
    Located in Glen Ellen, CA
Many of Gerard Tsutakawa’s home-sized sculptures, and some of his public ones, have a geometric window that allows the viewer to go through and beyond the form. In “Moonlight,” this small circle becomes the moon and one can go through its phases simply by moving from side to side, the highly polished edges of the circle’s edges mimicking delicate moonlight peering through the night of the dark patina surrounding it. "Moonlight" is finely hand-crafted in fabricated bronze, as opposed to cast, and is therefore one-of-a-kind rather than an edition. Finished with the artist’s rich, dark patina with bluish tinges and a polished inner circle. Gerard Tsutakawa’s designs are a confluence of the cultures and traditions of the Pacific Rim. Tsutakawa grew up with a rich heritage of Japanese design creativity and sensibility combined with a lifetime spent in the Pacific Northwest’s beautiful natural environment. Exposure to the esthetics of cultures around the Pacific Rim instilled a humanistic approach to his creative process. He gathers images as bold as a Tongan war club, or as sensitive as folded origami paper, and creates a subliminal integration as a new art form.   Tsutakawa apprenticed with his father, the late George Tsutakawa...
