Steven Heinemann
Terra Alba - creamy white, nature inspired, tear drop shaped, ceramic vessel

2012

About the Item

This superbly crafted tear-drop shaped vessel is by the master Canadian ceramicist Steven Heinemann. The creamy white colour of this piece is highlighted by black detailing and the form itself is enhanced by the ceramic’s grainy texture. The bowl is an ancient form and Heinemann’s creative re-interpretation of this classic shape speaks to shared human experience. “While you might say the bowl has this inherent modesty, it also offers a kind of theatre in which space can be activated, or some event takes place. In my case that seems to be tied to phenomena, pattern, somewhere between organic growth and geologic event.” - Steven Heinemann He earned an MFA from Alfred University, NY, in 1983 and has taught in Canada and the US. Since his first solo exhibition in 1982 at the Ontario Crafts Council, he has exhibited continuously. Heinemann’s work is held in museums the world over. He has received many national and international awards including the Saidye Bronfman Award, Canada’s highest recognition of achievement in contemporary craft.

It is polished with a protective wax giving it a light sheen. “Tree roots hold traces and impressions of where they held on but still suggest the smooth, and continuous movement, the flow of water." Jana Osterman Born in Slovenia, Osterman moved to Holland where she studied at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. She continued with printmaking studies in England.
