Paul’s current series of abstract work focuses on macro images of nature combined with additional exposures of ice, snow, sand, and sky. These futuristic scenes, inspired by the writings of Kurt Vonnegut, offer a wry commentary on global warming and climate change. Ethiopian Girl

Cubist Style Mid Century Color Ethiopian Girl in pink hue Comes Unframed On Stretched Canvas About the Artist: Kenneth B Walsh (1922-1980) In the 1950s, Kenneth Bonar Walsh came to Montauk from New York City to paint seascapes, catch fish, sing of Nature's beauty, put down roots, and, later, develop a style of painting all his own. The Boston native moved to New York after attending the School of Practical Art on the G.I. Bill, where he began his career in the art department of Lever Brothers. But he had bigger dreams, and soon established the Bonart Studio, a commercial art business. RCA Records, the Ideal and Transogram toy companies, and the Schrafft’s candy and chocolate company were among the studio’s clients. The business a success, he began to take vacations. He liked Montauk so much that he built a house in Hither Hills...

John Hatch American Cubist Landscape Oil Painting Massachusetts Seascape 1952
Located in Buffalo, NY
An original oil on board painting by American modernist John W. Hatch. This incredible cubist landscape was created in 1952. Estate stamped and dated on the reverse. Titled, "Nahant Rocks, Lynn, MA " with a partial exhibition label on the reverse. The painting comes housed in a black wood frame presentation. John Woodsum Hatch 1919-1998 During his fifty-year career as an artist, John Woodsum Hatch explored the people, the landscape, and the seascape around him. From his extensive travels to his years in New Hampshire, he developed a body of work that captures a sense of place. Through watercolor, ink and sand, he depicted the grandeur of the White Mountains. The crisp light and distinct topography of the Isles of Shoals and Great Bay Estuary are precisely and clearly documented in acrylic and tempera paintings. His ability to convey the sheer scale and longevity of the mountains and sea, and by comparison the fleeting nature of human life, conveys in a not-so-subtle way that the natural environment is to be revered and preserved. Hatch took his first teaching job at the University of New Hampshire in 1949, the same year he graduated from Yale University. He never left. A former student, Sam Cady, described his contributions: “He was a wonderful mix of jokester and sage. A teacher who obviously loved people, loved teaching, and had a great gift for it.” After retiring in 1985, he was made an honorary Professor Emeritus at UNH. Hatch contributed to New Hampshire's cultural life in three areas: his teaching, his art, and his community service. His effectiveness in these three areas can be traced his commitment to give something of himself to help others. Many artists teach by necessity and resent it as a drain on their creative energies but Hatch found his greatest fulfillment from a combination of teaching, making art, and being deeply involved with his community as an art historian and as an environmentalist. Hatch’s work can be seen in numerous public collections, including: the Addison Gallery of American Art; DeCordova Museum; Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts; State of New Hampshire's Living Treasures Collection, and the Portland Museum of Art in Maine. John Woodsum Hatch, New Hampshire's 1997 Living Treasure Award recipient, died on August 6, 1998, at the age of 78. Hatch was a draftsman, an artist and a muralist. His works can be found in public and private collections throughout the region. He exhibited at the New Hampshire Art...

Untitled: Yellow & Brown Still Life (Cubist Inspired Oil Painting, Linen, 1969)
By Lionel Gilbert
Located in Hudson, NY
Yellow & Brown Still Life (Mid Century Modern Cubist Oil Painting on Linen) by New York School Painter, Lionel Gilbert Mid century modern, abstracted still life painting by New York City artist c. 1969. oil on linen 40 x 36 inches original wood stripping with metal capping This vertical painting was painted by Lionel Gilbert in 1969. The mid-century modern, abstracted still life is created with a cubist influence where three-dimensional objects are depicted in multiple perspectives. A earth toned palette of yellow and dark brown with gestural brushstrokes is used to created the abstracted imagery. Original provenance label from Alonzo Gallery (now closed) on 26 East Street in New York City. Gilbert became affiliated with the Alonzo gallery in the 1960s through the 80s exhibiting his abstract work. About the work: Lionel Gilbert moved back and forth between abstraction and figuration, at once describing specific objects and presenting flat, unrecognizable forms. The artist, born in 1912, was a prolific painter from the nineteen-thirties until his death. For years, Gilbert worked as a mural artist and an illustrator, creating images that not only represented reality, but documented history. In the sixties, Gilbert’s direction shifted: no longer using the paint to tell stories, Gilbert began to explore what the paint itself—its materiality, color—can reveal, independent of its descriptive capacity. Gilbert's work calls to mind Matisse, Braque, and Leger in their cubist sensibility and handling of space. About the Artist: Gilbert fell in love with art at an early age and began his training at the age of 12 at the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Art in 1924. Upon graduating, Gilbert moved to France to study at L’Academie de la Grande Chaumier for five years. The young artist returned to the US in 1938 and like many artists living during the Great Depression, Gilbert sought employment with the nation’s W.P.A program, creating large murals in many public buildings in the US. During WWII, he was sent to England as an official U.S. Air Force artist to portray various aspects of Air Force life. After the war, Gilbert became a full time artist and instructor. He went on to show his work in various galleries in New York City through the 1980’s and taught at the 92nd Street Y Art Center. Rather than placing focus on the act of painting itself, as many Abstract Expressionists did, Gilbert chose to involve himself with the abstraction of his subject matter. This led him to replace rapid brushstrokes for blocks of color that were oftentimes organized around semi-automatist forms, which is reminiscent of the work that preoccupied Hans Hoffman in the 1950’s. Lionel Gilbert (Born in Newark, NJ) 1924 Began studying at the Newark School of Fine & Industrial Art in their Saturday program for children. 1933 Graduated from the Newark School of Fine & Industrial Art, Newark, NJ. 1933-37 Studied in Paris at L’Academie de La Grande Chaumiere and privately with Salcia Bahnc...
