1978 Molded Plywood Armchair Set of 2 in Oak by Peter Danko for Thonet
By Thonet, Peter Danko
Located in Chattanooga, TN
Chairs listed and sold as a set of (2) It is truly no surprise that this same chair is in the permanent collection at The Smithsonian American Art Museum. Meditate on the genius involved in crafting each chair from a single sheet of layered ply. Cutting and molding a single medium into functional art with a style so timeless, the revival exceeds the debut. Designed by Peter Danko in 1978 and produced by Thonet, all but one chair had their original factory tags underneath. The three tags were gently removed and bagged separately during our restoration. Exquisitely re-upholstered in red-orange weave fabric to harmoniously compliment the honey colored oak frames. Our restoration team spent countless hours touching up the frames. Although a few still remain, most chips and scratches were expertly mitigated before we applied a topcoat to match the original. We're certain these chairs will meet expectations. The chair was gifted to the museum by Lloyd E. Herman, founding director and director emeritus of the Renwick Gallery (1971-1986), in honor of Michael W...

Set of 10, limited edition armchair variant of Gijs Bakker 1974 "strip" chairs
By Gijs Bakker
Located in bergen op zoom, NL
A very rare opportunity to acquire an original large matching set of the super rare armchair variant of Gijs Bakker's beautiful laminated Ash wood "strips" armchairs which were produced by Castelijn,Netherlands in 1974 .The production of the more technically difficult and expensive armchair variant was limited to just 1000 pieces and hence they are now very sought after. Original matching sets of this size very rarely appear on the market. The chairs are signed with Castlijn labels to the underside. According to Bakker the underlying idea behind the strips chair "was to reduce the complexity of the chair's form until a powerful image remained". The "strips" chairs are made of six strips of pressure moulded laminated ash wood linked by dowels. The armchair variant beyond its rarity is in our opinion even more beautiful than the standard armless version of the "Strip" chair and strongly recalls the form of Hans Pieck's super rare and iconic 1946 plywood chair. Another great feature is that the armchair variant is also stackable so transport costs will be significantly lower for our overseas clients than usual for a dining set of this scale. The chairs can be stacked up to six high. Please enquire directly to us for shipping quotes, the Hedleys quote listed on 1st dibs will be inaccurate as it does not take into account that the chairs stack so shipping volume will be greatly reduced. The strips chair was introduced at the 1974 trade and industry fair where a giant 5 metre by 5 metre model of a strips table...
