Stanislaw Trzebinski

Polish, South African, b. 1992

Sculptor Stanislaw Trzebinski is known for combining human forms with coral-like shapes. His ocean-inspired world is a deep dive into the relationship between ecology and humanity. As he told The Insider SA, he wants to echo in his bronze sculptures Sir David Attenborough’s solemn message that “we moved from being a part of nature to being apart from nature.”

Trzebinski grew up in Kenya exploring the rich biodiversity in the Great Rift Valley and along Africa’s Eastern Coast. Trzebinski spent time diving with his father and examining the textures and shapes of marine life. His father was a creative force who died when Trzebinski was nine years old. Wishing to follow in his father’s footsteps, Trzebinski set out on an artistic career, which led him to a brief time in New York at Pratt Institute

Trzebinski moved to Cape Town in 2012. His return to Africa marked a shift towards self-instruction and apprenticeship. He worked under South African sculptor Otto du Plessis who founded the Bronze Age Foundry, where Trzebinski learned the over 5,000-year-old lost-wax casting method before learning how to sculpt. This led to works that blur the line between reality and the fantastic.

Southern Guild represents Trzebinski and presented his work in the 2020 group show “Solace,” which included his oversized coral-shaped Nestle Chair that took over 2,800 hours to 3D print, as well as in solo shows “In The Absence Of Light” in 2019 and “Solastalgia” in 2022. Trzebinski’s exhibitions also include multiple shows at the Jan Royce Gallery in Cape Town, The Melrose Gallery in Johannesburg and Design Miami in Florida.

Important and Impressive Pair of 19th Century Bronze Sculptures
Located in Cesena, FC
Important pair of sculptures depicting Achello and Helena (mythological famous figures) in bronze, made with the lost-wax technique, dating from the 19th century (second half of the 1800s but made in the Empire style). Standing on a quadrangular column base in golden robes, they hold magnificent cornucopias (a symbol of prosperity and wealth). The heads are adorned with laurel wreaths. Of great aesthetic impact given both by the impressiveness of the figures and the measures (245 centimeters high) as well as the bases that support and complement the bodies, richly decorated with floral festoons and anthropomorphic friezes that stylistically recall the eclectic style typical of the second half of the 19th century. Prominent in the decorations are large acanthus leaves, feet and lion masks. This large pair...

Stanislaw Trzebinski, "Pulchellus Pelagicus (Frilled)", Bronze Sculpture
By Stanislaw Trzebinski
Located in Capetown, ZA
Stanislaw grew up in Nairobi, Kenya in a richly creative household filled with paintings by his late father – accomplished artist Tonio Trzebinski – artworks by close friends such as neighbor Peter Beard, countless books on art and design, and visceral interiors created by his fashion-designer mother Anna Trzebinski. Though they lived in the city, the pull of the ocean was ever-present. His father was an avid surfer and fisherman, and weekends were spent together free-diving, fishing and camping in Kenya's outdoors – inspiring a reverence for nature that has stayed with the artist ever since. In the Absence of Light continues the exploration of Stanislaw’s Extra Terrestrial series from 2018, enigmatic sculptural works that appear ancient and weathered even as they sprout new tendrils of life. Reminiscent of diverse organic forms such as coral, fungi and stalactites, the pieces seem to have grown biologically. Like many of his other works, they are emblazoned with the snaky, winding marks of Turing patterns, which model organic patterning in nature such as stripes and spots. Stanislaw’s new exhibition will launch a series of tables, an imposing installation of standing chandeliers...
