Faience Bowl or Plate by Nils Thorssen from Royal Copenhagen

About the Item

A fantastic faience bowl or plate by Nils Thorssen from Royal Copenhagen. The bowl has an abstract and intricate pattern, which reminds you of a mosaic church window, it is intricate, detailed and shows amazing professional skills. The model is known as Baca porcelain and the colours are various shades of brown to beige with white and darker details and the outside has deep chocolate brown colour. It is 26cm (10.23") in a rectangular shape and 5cm (1.96") high, and it is in a very good condition. Royal Copenhagen Royal Copenhagen is one of Europe's oldest manufacturers of porcelain. The factory was founded in 1775 and is today a world-leading brand for quality porcelain. The factory was established in 1775 under the patronage of Queen Dowager Juliana Marie and since then has used the same logo with the three waves. The factory was started by pharmacist Frantz Heinrich Müller who was given a monopoly on the operation for 50 years. The factory began producing faience in the 19th century. Philip Schou hired the architect Arnold Krog as artistic director in 1884, and with him at the helm, the factory entered a period of artistic brilliance, where the factory's products attracted great attention all over the world. At the World Exhibition in Paris in 1889, Danish porcelain was one of the main attractions, and Krog's work won the exhibition's Grand Prix. At the turn of the century in 1900, "Den Kongelige" together with Bing & Grøndahl had established themselves as the artistically dominant porcelain factory on the European market. Aluminia gradually got independent artistic management under Christian Joachim and later Nils Thorsson. Thorsson worked at both factories and gained great importance for their respective product lines. 20th century Aluminia, which a hundred years earlier had taken over Den Kongelige Porcelænsfabrik, ceased production of porcelain in 1969, although faience production continued on a very limited scale. The two by far the most famous tableware are Flora Danica and Musselmalet, which are still hand-painted at the factory in Glostrup. Royal Copenhagen bought Georg Jensen Sølvsmedie in 1972. The company merged with Holmegaard Glasværk in 1985 and with Bing & Grøndahl in 1987.
