Sculptural Bowl by Barbara Nanning, Glass
About the Item
Palladium IV, 2021 (Glass, Palladium, C. 7 in. H x 10.2 in. W x 9.4 in. D, Object No.: 4111).
Barbara Nanning’s mesmerizing sculptures unite tradition with innovation and are a fusion of carefully chosen unconventionally combined elements. Barbara unites classical artistic methods with innovative use of materials to achieve an entirely unique language of form, one which often evolves in the making process. As Barbara notes “after each of my trips abroad I return to my studio with a profusion of new ideas about color, design, and texture that has profoundly influenced my work.” Nanning sets down her inspiration in dozens of sketches, drawings, and photos that function as a memory aid.
?“I see myself as a material bound artist, inventing and developing unusual methods and techniques with new surface textures. I heavily rely on the malleability of the material and explore experimentally the boundaries of what is possible. With my work, I try to capture the essence of motion and growth.” Nature, both organic and inorganic, is a constant source of inspiration for Nanning. She examines crystals, jellyfish, flowers, and micro-organisms with an almost nineteenth-century fascination for form, structure, and geometry. The designer combines regularity with fluidity, order with chaos, and the rigid with the informal.
Barbara Nanning was born in 1957 in The Netherlands and lives and works in Amsterdam. She graduated from the prestigious Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam and is the recipient of several international awards.

- Unique Ceramic Bowl by Olivia WalkerBy Olivia WalkerLocated in New York, NYNest II, 2022 (Porcelain, C. 4.3 in. H x 7 in. W x 7 in. D., Object No.: 3925) Olivia Walker works in porcelain to create pieces that explore the symbiotic relationship between growth and decay, as well as the relationship between nature and man-made. All of her works start by being thrown on the wheel, before being built upon with thousands of individually-applied fragments of porcelain. Many of her vessels are thrown and altered – they are cut away and reassembled in the leather-hard stage which allows her to deconstruct the form of the bowl and then build up a surface on this new form. Olivia starts from a set point on a bowl and lets these organic accretions spread out and grow – ‘eating through," or growing over the form beneath. They make reference to organisms such as coral and fungus, but remain abstract. Olivia Walker was born in 1985 and lives and works in London. Her work was featured in numerous publications including Emerging Potters Magazine, Clay Craft...Category
