French Normandy Large Rustic Brass Milk Jug with Lid – circa 1850

About the Item

A rustic hand hammered Brass Milk Jug from Normandy, France, Circa 1850 A large piece of hand made brass used to transport milk from the country dairy to the home, often by donkey. The outer body shows the textured surface left by the hammering technique used in the making of this piece. The jug is formed of two pieces of brass meeting at the mid-section with a decorative joint. With the original lid. The lid has a wide collar that sits inside the top of the jug, keeping the contents from spilling during transport. A thick handle is securely attached to the body. During the early to the mid 1800’s, dairy farmers would transport milk from their farms to the local market where patrons would bring their own containers for filling. The early 1900’s saw the use of milk delivery trucks and these carafes became obsolete, making them somewhat scarce today. An impactful display piece for the kitchen. Measuring: 14 in. H x 14 inches in diameter. Good antique condition, with the expected wear and denting to the body, lid, and handle. Solder is seen at the joints, in the making. Corrosion to the inner rim of the lid.
