"The Four Elements, " Important, Unique Art Deco Vase by Vienna Werkstatte Artist
About the Item
Sculpted, fired and glazed by one of the Vienna Werkstatte's greatest artists -- Wally (or Vally) Wieselthier -- after she emigrated to America, this tall, extraordinary vase depicts the four elements -- water, air, fire and earth. Each of the Elements is depicted as a high style Art Deco goddess, accompanied by symbols of her role. Water is shown with fish and anemone; Fire with flames and the sun; Air with clouds and wind; and Earth with flowers and a dramatic tray of fruit on her head. The entire vase, flaring at top and bottom, is glazed in a lovely, pale seafoam green. Wieselthier is famous for her role in the Vienna Werkstatte, and produced many whimsical and masterful works there, before making her home in America just before the rise of the Nazis. She designed pieces for two or three ceramics companies in America, but this design for Mayer Artchina in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania is her greatest, in our opinion.
