Westerwald German Salt Glazed Figural Pottery Wine Jug
About the Item
A large and impressive German art pottery wine jug or ewer mounted with figures made in Westerwald and dating from around 1880. The tall and stunning stoneware jug stands raised on round shaped pedestal base applied in relief with adjoined oval panels set between floral and leaf designs supporting a round bulbous shaped body divided into sections with raised banding with acanthus leaves and small flowers applied in panels around the lower body and with small, winged heads and further leaf and scroll patterning applied around the central band with acanthus leaves around the upper edge. The jug has a large, raised spout similarly decorated with an ornate raised handle applied to the side with a small boy climbing up the lower section. A large, bearded head is applied where the handle joins the top rim. A lady in traditional costume sits perched on the front edge of the body supporting two large garlands which are draped around the upper body. The jug is painted in tones of blue on a grey ground in traditional Westerwald style and has a salt glazed finish. The jug is not marked however has an impressed number 285 to the base. A very impressive and wonderful display item for any setting.
Provenance: Acquired in the UK Art Market.
In good condition with a few minor surface glaze nicks, probably in the making and with light wear associated with age and use.
