A Fabulous 19th Century Oak Monks Bench

About the Item

A fabulous 19th Century well figured, oak monks bench of exceptional quality, finely hand carved with rich patination, grain and profusely decorated with carved detail throughout. The shaped and moulded twin panelled back with geometric and foliate motifs is surmounted with an ornate pediment with centred fan flanked with scrolling acanthus leaf motifs, finely carved in high relief. Raised over an elegantly simple hinged lift up seat of rectangular form which opens to reveal ample storage space and is flanked with fabulous etched diamond detail to each side of the bench. The shaped, moulded and pierced outswept arm supports with foliate and scroll motifs terminate with ornately carved mythical dragon masque detail in high relief, supported above fluted single panelled frieze with a further beautiful arrangement of centred rosette flanked with acanthus leaves to the central reserve, set within a lovely border of fan and foliate detail, terminating on block foot.
