  • Jean & Sébastien Touret Oak Bench, France, 1950s
    Located in Utrecht, NL
The term brutalism — which derives from the French word brut, meaning “raw” — was originally coined to describe an architectural style that emerged in the 1950s featuring monumental buildings, usually made of unornamented concrete, whose design was meant to project an air of strength and solidity. Similarly, in furniture design Brutalism inspired designers to create models with the same look of strength and style. This Jean & Sébastien Touret...

  • Carl Gustaf Hiort af Ornäs "TV-bench" for Huonekalu Mikko Nupponen, Finland 1950s
    By Carl Gustaf Hjort
    Located in Utrecht, NL
At the Tenth Milan Triennial in 1954, Finland received the largest relative proportion of available prizes. The amount was even more than those eight prizes the country collected at a previous Triennial in 1951, when it made its initial break-through in the international exhibitions of design. A new era had begun: The 1950s and 1960s became known as the golden age of Finnish design and also of designer, Carl Gustaf Hiort af Ornäs. Distinctive and original furniture characterize the Finnish mid-century, with immediately recognizable features such as the legs of this so-called “Kolmiojalka” (triangular foot) or simply ‘TV bench...

  • Axel Einar Hjorth "Utö" Bench, Sweden ca 1935
    By Axel Einar Hjorth
    Located in Utrecht, NL
This “Utö” bench is from the Swedish designer, Axel Einar Hjorth’s Sportstugemöble furniture line. This bench has a rather simple, yet well-thought out design. The frame is made of pine, mixing the aesthetics of rural, traditional handcraft with international modernism. Produced by AB Nordiska Kompaniet, this bench belongs to Hjorth's line of modernistic cabin furniture from the 1930's. The seat of the bench is thick and robust, with an oval shaped pine board, assuring sturdiness and stability. The symmetrically carved back with a gap in the middle offers comfort and functionality. The four tapered legs of the bench follow the shape of the backrests on both sides, accentuating the geometrical aspect, and highlighting the symmetry of this piece. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Dimensions: 54.92 in W x 18.7 in D x 31.3 in H ; Seat height 15.55 in 139.5 cm W x 47.5 cm D x 79.5 cm H; Seat height 39.5 cm Literature: Christian Björk, Thomas Ekström...

  • Lisa Hilland "Spira" Side Table for Wigells Malmbäck, Sweden 2021
    Located in Utrecht, NL
The “Spira” is a collection by Swedish product designer Lisa Hilland. This side table is a contemporary design with a poetic twist, combining modern high-tech production techniques with artisan quality craftsmanship. As it is with many contemporary pieces, this table balances on the line between sculpture and furniture. This sculptural object, reminiscent of a growing forest in nature, shows quality and attention down to the smallest detail. The line’s Swedish name, spira meaning spire, is self-explanatory, as the structure comprised of small, connecting oak spires. The individual spires are arranged in three levels in a wave pattern, which creates a sense of movement, especially on the top. The round, smooth tabletop is perfect to complement the design and to serve a functional role. Apart from its unique spire structure, this table features a lower level that was created for a pet, hence the cosy throw rug. This is a delightful feature, and has never gone into production, making this model exclusive and unique. With the Spira collection, Hilland highlights the wood's natural beauty and character with a strong focus on quality, maximum sustainability and environmental care. Spira is therefore manufactured exclusively from high-quality and environmentally friendly, socially responsible and economically viable forestry. Thanks to its outstanding design and Hilland’s emphasis on sustainability, the Spira series earned the Plaza Interior’s award of honour in 2021. Swedish furniture manufacturer, Wigells, has been manufacturing furniture for more than 140 years. They are best known for their wide range of wooden pieces. Everything is still manufactured in Malmbäck, Småland, where with great experience and craftsmanship, they give shape to high-quality pieces. Condition: In very good condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Dimensions: 29.33 in D x 29.52 in H 74.5 cm D x 75 cm H About the designer: Lisa Hilland (1973-) creates contemporary design with a poetic twist, combining modern high-tech production techniques with artisan quality craftsmanship.
