The Man in the White Suit

About the Item

Original British film poster for the classic 1951 Ealing comedy. Most film posters were designed in house by studio artists and designers. However, throughout the 40s and 50s Ealing Studios broke the mould by adopting an ambitious and inventive approach to poster design. Headed by S. John Woods, a formidable graphic designer in his own right, the Ealing advertising department invited contemporary artists and designers to create posters for their films. Almost all posters up until the late 1970s were distributed folded. Ealing Studios made a point of distributing the majority of their posters rolled, as they valued the artworks and medium of posters. The poster campaign for this film, with its striking image of a strident Alec Guinness in his white suit, stepping out against the bright red background, is a truly unforgettable image from Ealing Studios and from the 1950s. This poster is unfolded and conservation linen backed and it would be shipped rolled in a very strong tube and sent by Federal Express.

With a retelling of a German fairytale by the Brothers Grimm, Walt Disney introduced a sceptical America to his first full-length cel animated feature film in 1937. Hailed as a landmark work of art, 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' was a smash hit, paving the way for further Disney features including 'Pinocchio' (1940), 'Dumbo' (1941) and 'Bambi' (1942), and changing the course of movie history. Disney was awarded an honorary Oscar at the 11th Academy Awards for a significant screen innovation which has charmed millions and pioneered a great new entertainment field. Adjusted for inflation, 'Snow White' remains one of the top ten highest grossing films of all time. The popularity of the film has led to its being re-released theatrically many times. Following the film's first French release in 1938 it was shown almost continuously until American films were banned during the Nazi occupation in 1942. Post-liberation, 'Blanche Neige et les sept...
