"Europa and the Bull", Art Deco Masterwork of Inlaid Wood by Szoeke, 1939
About the Item
This masterwork of inlaid wood -- in stunning, interlocking pieces of burled walnut and maple, mahogany and beech -- depicts Europa riding the bull, a classic story from Greek mythology. The artist was Andrew Szoeke, who was America's greatest practitioner of inlaid wood artistry in the Art Deco period, his only rivals being a group of artists in Sweden. Szoeke, a Hungarian-American artist, is also known for a series of felt applique and wood pieces that featured Zodiac symbols, again drawing from mythological sources. The piece is signed and dated on one edge.
