Modernism Served Warm and Easy

All photos by Stephen Kent Johnson

Neal Beckstedt’s design aesthetic has its roots in his upbringing on an Ohio farm. The New York–based designer loves to create modern interiors that are functional, earthy, personal and rich in homespun detail. Take this communal dining room in an East Hampton guest house. The folksy yet sophisticated Josef Frank–designed linen wallcovering may take center stage, but what gives the room its character and warmth is the rough-hewn beams combined with the beautifully patinated 17th-century Spanish dining table, from Provenance Antiques, and the quirky assortment of vintage rattan dining chairs, sourced on 1stDibs from Galerie Canavese and DADA Studios, along with the client’s own pair of Charlotte Perriand leather-and-steel chairs. “We strive for interiors that are dramatic, yet livable, relaxed and eclectic,” says Beckstedt. “This room achieves it in spades.”
