Studio AHEAD
East Meets West Meets Landscape
Inspired by California’s wild open landscapes and freewheeling makers and their own cultural roots in the old Silk Road, Elena Dendiberia and Homan Rajai have an unconventional aesthetic sensibility that makes their San Francisco–based design firm, Studio AHEAD, unlike any other. It’s everywhere apparent in this snug yet striking bedroom in a historic Victorian in San Francisco’s Pacific Heights. The velvet-upholstered bed, a variation on their custom-production Sheep bed, creates a distinctive roomscape without altering the interior architecture. Meanwhile, a Pierre Cardin–designed brass table lamp, a walnut sculpture by L.A. artist Christopher Norman and a rope commode by Christian Astuguevieille, all sourced from 1stDibs, contrast and harmonize with its soft, rolling form. A custom-made tatami-style wool rug both contributes to the room’s subdued eclecticism and enhances its cocoon-like feel.
