Glamour Crafted for Today

Photo © James McDonald

With utter sophistication, and a bit of cheek, Bryan O’Sullivan concocts interiors that exude old-world glamour while feeling very much now. One look at the luscious library he created for a client in Notting Hill, and you understand why he’s in demand around the globe, with offices in London and New York. Here, sumptuous color stars. “It took the decorative artists Mathew Bray and Matthew Collins days to hand apply the lacquer finish,” he says. Yet what makes the room at once cozy and refined is the intriguing way O’Sullivan blends furnishings, fabrics and forms: a pale-green-velvet-upholstered sofa combined with a vintage bronze coffee table by Ado Chale, an angular armchair by Mats Theselius and twin ceramic lamps by Christopher Spitzmiller with jewel-like gilded bases. The pièce de résistance for the Irish-born designer is the pair of brass Eldorado chairs, also by Mats Theselius, in the bay window. Where better to enjoy a martini?
