Warmly Inventive Tradition

Photos by Haris Kenjar

There’s something to be said for autodidacts. Their work often has a freshness and flair that the formally trained can’t match. Heidi Caillier is a case in point. Her zesty brand of traditional style has made this unschooled but aesthetically savvy — and bold — interior designer, based in Tacoma, Washington, much in demand. For this renovated 1938 farmhouse in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, Caillier mixed modern Americana with British country house. For her, the contemporary BDDW sofa, with its whimsical short wooden arms, bronze ball feet and old-fashioned chintz upholstery, perfectly embodies the vibe. A chinoiserie coffee table adds a touch of antique rarity to the room, while the modern painting in a spare wood frame speaks very much of today without feeling jarring. What pulls these eclectic elements together? Caillier points to the beautiful millwork in a muted green, which “helps the room feel cozy.”
