Monica Fried Design
A Modern Mix for an Amagansett Getaway

The quintessential elements of the architectural genus known as Hamptons Modern — window walls, driftwood-hued vaulted ceilings and minimalist stone hearth — create an envelope often decorated with overstuffed seating and beachy blues. In this Amagansett living room, however, the eponymous founder of New York–based Monica Fried Design opted for lean, sculptural furniture and an earthy palette, with Air sofas by ATRA Form in a piquant olive leather. “They were a big leap for the clients but the big wow factor in the room,” Fried says. Simultaneously sophisticated and relaxed, Fried’s curation of contemporary and vintage furniture and lighting that work seamlessly together is “trend-proof,” she adds. Here, she deployed a mélange of design classics — an Isamu Noguchi pendant light and California Modern lounge chairs by Dan Johnson for Selig, sourced on 1stDibs — and current pieces, including a BDDW leather armchair, a Lawson-Fenning coffee table and an Alessandra Delgado Rotula floor lamp, another 1stDibs find. “It’s all in the mix,” she says, “and this room is a great example of our favorite look — old and new vibing together to achieve a modern, timeless aesthetic.”
