“The incredible view of the mountains was the best artwork one could hope for,” Shawn Henderson says of the getaway home he designed for a family in Aspen. Known for his tailored interiors enlivened by exceptional 20th-century art and furniture, as well as custom contemporary pieces, Henderson explains that he took a “relaxed approach to creating a space that toed the line between classic and contemporary.” After bleaching the ceiling and upper window casings, the designer, who began his career with Thad Hayes and has headed his namesake firm for 21 years, echoed the wood tones with his own designs for sofas, a settee and a mammoth coffee table made of Pyrolave lava stone — “It’s impressive and indestructible,” Henderson says. Vintage furnishings, including burgundy-upholstered Guillerme et Chambron wing chairs flanking a 1965 Pierre Chapo T 08 coffee table, pillows made from Uzbekistan ikat and a pair of 1980s Kosta Boda amber-glass table lamps, add color and warmth to the room. “Together, all these elements feel effortless, unexpected and very modern,” says Henderson.
