Life on the Hudson

“I get inspiration everywhere,” says Damon Liss, whose firm has been a fixture in Manhattan’s Tribeca neighborhood for more than two decades. “Inspiration isn’t always an intentional endeavor. Life’s most simple and basic things can catch your eye.” For the living room of an apartment overlooking the Hudson River, the vistas were a natural influence on the design. “The soothing energy of the breathtaking views throughout the room is reflected in its neutral tones,” Liss says. To allow for an uninterrupted sight line, the furniture is low-slung, save for the pair of Fritz Hansen lounge chairs, found on 1stDibs, whose whimsical backs rise high enough to briefly capture attention away from the water. Covering the Jindřich Halabala armchairs is a blue fabric with white flecks from Toyine Sellers that seems to pay homage to the river’s occasional wind-blown whitecaps. From Donzella, Liss sourced the studio-made side table and two Max Ingrand for Fontana Arte chandeliers. “A pair of colored multi-disc Max Ingrand chandeliers in one room is not something you see every day,” Liss says. “A matching pair of these fixtures is rare, adds unique detail to the room and creates balance and unity in the large space.”
