David Kleinberg Design Associates
Black and White and Artful All Over

A study in symmetry, this Manhattan entry hall by David Kleinberg Design Associates also serves as a sort of streamlined gallery, its walls adorned with the clients’ collection of art by contemporary Iranian painters and mid-20th century masters and its doorway framing a monumental Manolo Valdes sculpture in the adjacent dining room. The patterned marble floor was “inspired by a design found in the influential book Entryways of Milan and owes a large debt to Italian mid-century design,” says the New York City firm’s founder, David Kleinberg. While boldly graphic, the floor’s neutral tones let the expressive colors and brushstrokes of Hans Hofmann, Le Corbusier, Ali Banisadr and Hadieh Shafie capture the eye and engage the imagination. Equally alluring are Paris-based designer Hervé Van der Straeten’s contemporary Cubist Kasimir consoles and Lustre Galatée pendant. The Workshop/APD bench was found on 1stDibs. “We love its functional and simple design in bent metal and leather and that it has a section without upholstery,” Kleinberg says. “This allows for the perfect sturdy place to set down one’s coffee while running out the door.”
