To transform a Manhattan industrial loft — complete with exposed ducts and utility pipes — into a chic yet cozy showcase for entertaining, LP Creative founder Lauren Garrett embraced an autumnal palette and plush fabrics, as well as the simplicity of form, use of natural materials and expert craftsmanship that impressed her as a visitor to Japan. Her massive custom, L-shape, built-in sofa — covered in olive-green velvet, with one cushion in a vintage Japanese boro fabric — is an inviting spot for guests to “puddle,” says the designer, who has offices in Los Angeles and New York City. Such a commanding piece called for lighter sculptural elements to create balance and prevent the space from feeling too heavy. “I love incorporating unique silhouettes that aren’t commonly seen, and I knew the large windows would backlight the furniture,” adds Garrett. “So, pieces like the Verner Panton Bachelor sling armchair, a mid-century walnut slat bench and the Japanese iron and mohair stool, all from 1stDibs, were perfect choices.”
